Windows 10 Open File dialog problem

    Hello,

Probably it is well known problem already, but I still can´t find a solution for it and I hope that maybe with some additional details someone could help me or this problem might be solved in future updates.

When I updated to Windows 10 feature update 1909 from update 1803, I run into unexpected problem. One of the programs I wrote in C# just finished working when I tried to open a file.

When I repeated the same operation in Visual Studio editor, at the line
    openFileDialog1.ShowDialog;
    I've got the message
The program '[13720] YouTubeTextFilePlaylist.exe' has exited with code -1073740771 0xc000041d.

Later I've noticed that sometimes I get problems with opening files in other programs as well. For example in Windows Word that crushed sometimes, at starting new blank document, opening, saving and printing. I was hoping that some Windows update will fix it. But now, I am running feature update 2020H2 and the probem is still here. For this reason I tried to get more information about this problem. I tried some solutions I've found, sometimes they worked for a short time. One interesting remark I've found is that everything works smoothly when program run as administrator.

I tried to get some more information about this error and here is some info from WinDbg Preview.

    Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK

  3. Problem with Explorer and file dialogs

I'm having a problem with File Explorer and with file dialogs. It is similar to some of those reported here but also there are differences in some respects.

    • Windows 10, up-to-date.
    • Problem began after the February "patch Tuesday" update.
    • Appears randomly--slightly less frequently since the March update, but still occurring. Sometimes when machine is first started.
    • Symptoms are that File Explorer windows sit indefinitely saying "Working on it", same applies to file dialogs too.
    • Also Google Chrome becomes very slow at loading web pages: > 5 minutes, but Edge is not affected.
    • Restarting Explorer does NOT work, but restarting the computer does--BUT restarting takes much longer than usual, again >= 5 minutes.
Any suggestions? This computer came with Windows 10, so I cannot revert to an earlier version.

I have to say that Windows 10 is by far the least reliable version I've encountered. Even free, it isn't good value!

  4. Windows 10 Open File dialog problem

External HardDrive Problem (please help Windows 10 Open File dialog problem :( )

    Try this:

    1) Insert your flash/external drive into the USB port.

    2) When you see the AutoPlay dialog box, click Cancel.

    3) Open My Computer, right-click your flash drive icon, and select Properties.

4)In the Properties dialog box, select the AutoPlay tab.

    5) Perform the following steps for each item in the Content Type drop-down list:
    > Select an item in the Content Type drop-down list.
    > Choose Select An Action To Perform in the Actions panel.
    > Select the Open Folder To View Files In Windows Explorer action.
    > Click the Apply button.
    > Click OK to close the Properties dialog box.

Now use the Safely Remove Hardware feature to remove your flash drive — wait a moment and plug it back in. You’ll see the AutoPlay progress appear momentarily, and then you should see Windows Explorer open to show the contents of the flash drive.
