WIndows 10 Reactivation after Motherboard Swap

Hello, I recently upgraded my PC motherboard and am having some issues activating Windows. Before I upgraded, I linked my Windows digital license to my Microsoft account hoping that this would prevent any issues. However, when I booted up after replacing the motherboard, Windows activation says that Windows is not activated. After running the troubleshooter and selecting "I changed hardware on this device recently," and then selecting the device I am currently on, I get a message that Windows cannot be activated because "the digital license for this device has already been used to reactivate Windows." This is the first time that I have replaced the motherboard, and also the first time that I have had an issue with Windows, so i don't see how this could be true. Also, when looking at the Windows activation page in the settings, it says that "Something prevented us fro communicating with our activation servers. Wait a few minutes and then try again," and then gives me an error code. I'm not sure if the reason this is happening is because the Windows activation servers are actually down, or if something else is going on. I have been troubleshooting for a couple of hours now and it says that there is still an error with activation servers, so I doubt they could be down for that long. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    :)

  3. win 10 motherboard change, reactivating windows

    Hi Famie,

If you are planning to change your motherboard, you will still be able to activate your Windows 10. In Windows 10 version 1607, there is a feature that you can link your Microsoft account to Windows 10 digital license on your device.
This can help you reactivate Windows using the Activation troubleshooter if you make a significant hardware change later, such as replacing the motherboard.

That being said, we suggest that you follow the steps given on this article
to reactivate your Windows 10 after a hardware change.

Let us know if you need further assistance.

If you think this was useful, do not hesitate to "mark it as an answer" to help those are facing the same problem.

    Reactivation after motherboard swap

My motherboard died, I'm going to get a new one that's going to be a different brand so I imagine Win 10 will notice. I'm aware that the proper way to reactivate after a hardware change is to link your license to an MS account. The thing is, I never linked the license to an MS account before the motherboard died. My Win 10 install is an upgrade from non-OEM Windows 7 Ultimate DVD. Will I be able to re-activate my install after I get a new motherboard without having to get a hold of MS support?
