    Windows 10 refuses to sleep

I curious, what are all these Windows Updates you are getting?
I'm not getting any updates after the first 3 the day I installed Win 10.

I set up a different Win 10 VM using Windows Defender.
That one shows the definitions got updated, but there is no entry in Update History for it.

    I haven't seen the svchost.exe request yet...

Pretty much all my updates (about 4 per day!) are Defender definition ones. These auto updates don't show in the update history you need to use Event log/system to see them.

Interesting that you don't see the svchost request. Maybe this is because it is a VM?????

Oh, I didn't look in the Event log.
I didn't know they aren't listed in Update History anymore.
That's a good change imho, I never liked all the entries for those updates...filled update history with useless clutter.

Yea, I don't know why I don't get a svchost request if everyone else does...

Just looked in update history again. Made a liar out of me! There are defn updates showing there! Don't know why they weren't there a couple of days ago. Must be going mad!

Seems we are getting 1 per day, with 2 on the 4th.

I just ran a manual update from the Windows Defender window and that one shows in Windows Update History.
    But still no svchost request.
    *Confused

Weird re the svchost request. Maybe it appeared and was cancelled as it should have been?????

I don't have a request override for it (or anything) on this OS.
If it disappeared it did it automatically and real quick after I did the manual update.
I think I'm going to do another clean install and see what happens...

I did see a request for wmpnetwk earlier on this OS, and that disappeared by itself sometime later.
Sleep is working on this OS.

    Windows 10 refuses to sleep

After a clean install I finally was able to get a svchost request.
In Windows Update settings, when I clicked on "Give me updates for other Microsoft products when I update Windows", that re-triggered a check that showed Updates available.
Then I checked requests, and i had the svchost request.

    Auto Sleep stopped working.
I entered 3 different request overrides to fix this and none of them worked, to fix auto sleep.

At this point I had not clicked check for updates, and manually install any available...I normally do this on a clean install, but not for this test...

The WD definitions updated automatically, but 2 other updates were still pending (not installed).
Later I looked at Windows Update and the 2 other updates that were pending had disappeared, and had not been installed.

Waited a day for Windows Update to automatically run again.
It installed the WD definitions update and showed the 2 other updates pending as before.
I now had 3 svchost requests and auto sleep still didn't work.

I manually installed the 2 other updates that did not install automatically.
    Rebooted.
Checked requests, and all the svchost requests were gone.
    Auto Sleep now works!

I THINK this is a "Tech Preview" anomaly, and (hopefully) won't affect the final release...
With Tech Preview changing the default setting "Install updates automatically..." is disabled, presumably so everyone using WTP gets updated...
For me the auto update didn't install all the updates available...
I normally use "check for updates, but let me choose"...that's not possible in WTP.

Well, it seems as if yours is doing just what mine is i.e. adding svchost requests and not clearing them thus stopping sleeping. The reboot clears them and all is well again until the next update, manual or auto.

So, would a workaround be to tell Windows not to automatically install updates; to let us install them ourselves?

    Edit: Whoops, I didn't read closely enough . . . manual or auto. Sigh . . .

You can't opt out of auto update either!

Anyway, I am just hopeful that MS will one day look at this and fix it before RTM.

    Windows 10 refuses to sleep

From what I've seen if there is a svchost request auto sleep doesn't work until a reboot to clear the request.
Same as linw says in Post #67

I'm using WTP as a VM, and don't use/want auto sleep for the VM.
VM auto sleep does not sleep the PC for me, just the VM OS ...

The HOST Win7 OS auto sleep works fine, and sleeps the PC as needed ... including the WTP VM ...

For anyone wanting auto-sleep I think the workaround/fix is to use some other AV than Windows Defender (WD).
That should end the daily Windows Update (WD definitions) that create the svchost requests preventing sleep ...

    hth,
    David

Is it only MS updates that set the power request, David? I haven't yet seen any other s'ware update to check.

  15. Wynona Win User
Lin, I just reset Windows and there was a step that asked me if I wanted to do the auto update thing, which leads me to believe I can actually opt out . . . unless you're saying the Preview won't let me opt out.
