When you say to "Type your username", where do I type it? I see a place for "Object Type" and "From this location", but nothing for a username.

So I see where to put the Username, but how do I know what my username is? I've tried my actual name, and I've tried what I usually use as a username in various applications, but neither works. I didn't even know I had a username for this computer!

Windows 10 says I don't have permission to save anything.

I encountered something like this when I switched from Local Account to Microsoft account and added a Home Group.
All my personal folders got changed to HomeGroup security settings, not my personal user (admin) settings.
I went through them all (Documents, Downloads, etc.), removed the Homegroup and made myself owner with shared inheritance.
It was not what I expected to happen.

I don't know if it was the Homegroup or the MS account that did it.

I ended up removing Homegroup stuff completely and removing the MS account as I don't need any of that Network shared stuff, OneDrive, etc.

My recommendation is to have two accounts if you need MS services - one with the MS account, the other keep personal (local).

  10. This is the exact problem I had. Absolutely NOTHING would work. I couldn't click Start, Edge, Action Center...nothing. I could not figure it out at all. And it didn't happen until I tried to change permissions on my folders to be able to access them from other computers in the house. I have chosen NOT to mess around with permissions now that I have went back to win7 and then upgraded to win10 again.

Funny thing is while I was changing permissions on my pc, my husband was chatting with Microsoft and they had remote control over his pc. They changed his permissions to share files and lo and behold...SAME THING. They advised him to go back to win7. wtf? Is it the homegroup? I purposely haven't connected to it yet, just in case.

I had same problem but I think I solved it. However, my problem is that I couldn't save to OneDrive folders. Other than that, I can save.

I found out that OneDrive permission keep resetting itself is because I have Homegroup network. My other computer without HomeGroup network doesn't have this problem. Once it's set, the permission doesn't change back. So, for those with Homegroup network, you'll find in Sharing tab of folder properties 2 entries: one is Homegroup and the other is the owner.

Just change the permission level of Homegroup to Read/Write instead of Read only.

Also in my settings, OneDrive is owned by my userid, with SYSTEM, ADMINISTRATORS, and Homeusers have all FULL CONTROL.

I realized that permission kept resetting is because my computer is considered to be part of Homegroup network, which only has Read-only access.

If you want to check if it works or not, just right click inside OneDrive folder, choose NEW. IF you only see FOLDER, then it's read-only. If it shows other file types, then it's solved.

I've been resetting my computer a few times and working with files inside OneDrive and I haven't encountered OneDrive problem yet.

In short, if you use Homegroup network, make sure that Sharing is Read+Write. If you don't, just remove your Homegroup network. Or use Workgroup instead. And yes, I'm using MS Account.

14k views on this problem! This should be high on the bug list by now.

So what user name would I enter? In other words the user name on the login screen doesn't work and no other user name i can come with is accepted when I click "Check Names".

  15. I am not sure if this will fix the problem but go to Windows Update and install update KB 3074683. Not sure if that installs Windows 10 Service release 1 but see if that will fix it if anyone is still having this problem.
