Windows 10: Windows 10 says there is no audio output (or input) installed.

Yesterday while I was opening up my laptop I noticed that where the usual "adjust volume" button is there was an X. It was there when I used it in the morning, just not after. It said there was no audio output device installed. Troubleshooting could not identify the problem. The audio does not work with headphones plugged in, either. Naturally I opened up device manager:





I tried installing, restarting, and updating my laptop. Did not work. When I click "update driver" it says that Windows could not find drivers for my device.


Under "Sound, video, and game", it says that my Intel (R) Display Audio is working properly.


Under "System devices" it says this:



Other forums said that if I uninstalled the driver and then restarted my computer that the audio would be fixed when it rebooted. That did not work. I got this computer in August so it is pretty much new. It is running the newest version of Windows 10.


I'm not a computer expert so I won't understand big words. If anyone has any idea of what is going on that would be appreciated. Thanks.

The audio issue you're experiencing might be due to a variety of reasons. One of which is due to an outdated driver.

That being said, have you updated your drivers, especially your Audio inputs and outputs driver? If not, you can follow the steps found on this
link on
how to update your drivers in Windows 10.

If updating the driver didn't work, you may reinstall it by following these steps:

• Right-click Start, then select Device Manager.
  
• Right-click the driver under Audio inputs and outputs, then select
  Uninstall.
  
• Restart your laptop to automatically reinstall the drivers. Make sure that you update the driver after re-installation.

No Audio Output Device is Installed

Hi,

You will need to select Windows 8 from the drop down list while installing the driver in compatibility mode.

I would suggest you to try setting the speaker as default audio output by following the steps below and check if it helps.

1. Right click on the sound icon on the right bottom corner of the taskbar.

2. Select "playback devices".

3. If "speaker" is not set as the default device, highlight it and click "set as default".

5. Save the changes.

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

First, I would suggest you to follow these steps and run the Hardware and devices troubleshooter:

• Type “Troubleshoot” without quotes in search and click on
  Troubleshooting in the results displayed on the left side of the screen.
• In the left pane, click on View all.
• Click Audio playback and follow the on-screen instructions.

After running the troubleshooter, try to install the Mouse drivers from the manufacturer website and check if it helps:

1) Press Windows + X and select
Device manager.

2) Select Audio input and output.

3) Right click on driver and select update driver software.

4) Next follow the instructions to install it.



If the issue still persists, the rollback the driver and check the issue.

To rollback:

• 
  Right click on driver.
  
• 
  Select Properties and click on
  Driver tab.
  
• 
  Now select Rollback driver.
