Windows 10: Windows 10 - Search bar not allowing me to type

Hi there,


Since yesterday (15/01/2019) the search box on the taskbar will not accept any typing input.


Normal behavior: Click in the white box where it says "Type here to search", and type.


New, incorrect behavior: Click in the white box where it says "Type here to search", but the box turns from white to grey, and does not accept any input.


Workarounds: Spam left-clicking in the box WHILST typing does force it to recognise input, but not for long. This makes me think that there's a very short window where the normal behavior above still applies, but for some reason it times out in a matter of milliseconds and the box turns grey.


Restarting the computer also seems to help for a short while - this was happening last night, I restarted my computer and was able to use it correctly for a few hours, went to sleep, woke up (PC was locked for this time) but having now come back to my computer, the issue has reoccurred.


Input into other applications (Word, Chrome, Windows Explorer search boxes, etc) is absolutely fine. The issue is with the Cortana/search box.

If you meant the Cortana search bar, review the suggested solutions on these threads:

• Can't type in Windows 10 search bar.
• Can't type anything in Win 10 Apps (Cortana, Search, Calculator, Feedback, etc.)

IE11 Google Toolbar no auto search suggestions, no search history?


Since the last Win 10 update my Google Toolbar won't list any search suggestions as I type and there is no search history listed. The Google tool bar will allow a search, but after a few searches no search history shows and no "clear search" button is listed either.

I have turnd on "Suggest searches as you type", and "store search histroy on my computer" in the Google Toolbar options.

Any suggestions to fix this?

This can be caused by corrupted system files. To help resolve the issue, we suggest following the steps provided by Abdul_Malik in this
thread that was found helpful in resolving the same issue. After doing so, try using
the search bar and see if you can type anything on it.
