Oh. Jeff not to worry I saved all my data to my Google drive so that's safe and sound. I will attempt to partition the drive after the Windows 10 deal works. I was terrified to muddy the waters.

There's a guy that comes out and works on my parents computers. He works for IBM so I trust him.

I really appreciate you trying to help me.

  6. Download the WIndows 10 Media Creation Tool and create an ISO image.
If you have a DVD Burner make the DVD, otherwise make a bootable flash drive with rufus or another tool.

The easiest way to proceed is to run the setup program from within windows. After accepting the license agreement, it will check to see if your computer is windows 10 ready (even if you are already running it.) Then you will be prompted to select what to keep. Assuming that you have properly backed up your data, select "keep nothing". This will give you a "clean install". You will need to reinstall any programs you had, reconfigure email, re-install your printers or other devices and restore your data from backup to be 100% functional again. If you were slow before, you should see a great improvement in performance.

You can also boot from the DVD or flash drive, but with the complexities of a UEFI BIOS, many people will get confused over the option they should select. (You might need to disable secure boot and/or put the machine into legacy mode with the drive containing windows 10 set as the first boot device) Note: once you have installed windows 10 on a machine, you can skip entering a product key the second time around. The activation mechanism will remember that your PC is licensed for the version of Windows 10 that you initially installed.

I find it boots up OK but then everything runs absolutely slowly. If I do a search for anything using the Cortana thing, it can take up to 5 minutes to find most things. On my lap top it is instant, but laptops are just toys to me as I only use it to play games.
I am using a home built system with a fast processor (i7) and 16meg of ram, and it was lightning in Windows 7 Ultimate.
How do you do a clean install when you have about 16 gig of data to protect?

Windows 10 is definitely slower than 8.1 or 7. I have a Dell XPS Studio 8300 with i7 and stacks of RAM. I do a lot of work with an Access database and when I upgraded from 7 to 10 it now re-calculates much more slowly. All my browsers download large images much more slowly. I support around 50 Dell PCs of various ages and types for a charity, mainly Vostros with Core-Duos, and these were all running 8.1 for about a year. I have upgraded all of them to 10 and they are slower. MS has gone a step too far and added so many features and Services that they appear to have lost control of the architecture. You only have to look at some of the inane answers from MS staff on the Community forums to see that they no longer understand their product and have no idea how to fix some of the problems and just keep adding more features. I would advise anyone with 8.1 to stay with it as it has all the features you need beyond 7 without the excessive architecture of 10.

Not in general. You may be experiencing slower performance on your particular machine, most likely because you in-place upgraded a messed up install from 7/8.1 rather than fresh installed 10, but in general Windows 10 is as fast or faster than 7 and 8.1. Also, it looks like you upgraded some pretty old machines to 10.

umm you copy it to a 16GB flash drive then copy it back after you do the clean install? You could also get someone who knows what they're doing to do this for you.

Its also the large number of programs that exist on my machine that I have long since lost the disks for. Not to worry - I have managed to clean up the machine by getting rid of the rubbish, cleaning the registry and deleting programs I did not need. Only about 500,000 files to sort now. My data goes back as far as the internet and before.
    Thanks for the tip.

Just wondering why there is a lag when hitting the start button?
On my box it is about 3 - 4 seconds sometimes, other things smooth as silk.

  14. I was having issues with windows running super slow. AIt was the amount of free space on my main hdd. I went from 4Gb free space to 50Gb by moving some stuff to my other hdd and the difference has been night and day! HOPE THAT HELPS SOMEONE.
