Windows 10: Windows 10 shows 512 Gb SSD disk as 256 Gb

I have a Lenovo laptop with SanDisk 512 Gb SSD that came with preinstalled Windows 10 Pro. The disk P/N as shown by both the Lenovo utility and Device Manager corresponds to the 512 Gb model. The Lenovo utility and diskpart show the disk as having 512 Gb capacity well, actually 476 Gb formatted space.


However, Disk Management shows the disk is only 256 Gb in size, and diskpart shows there are 4 partitions including C: of 237 Gb and 3 more system/recovery partitions - 1 Gb of total size and no more free space.


chkdsk finds no errors. No suspicious events both in the Application and System logs. All drivers are up to date. BitLocker is enabled.


Where is half of the disk capacity?

Toshiba THNSNH256GCST 256 GB SSD

We recently tested the 512 GB version of Toshiba's latest SSD with 19 nm flash chips and a rebranded Marvell controller. Today, we are looking at the 256 GB version to investigate whether the smaller capacity reduces performance, or if it too manages to claim the performance throne.

Samsung SSD 850 PRO 512 GB DRIVERS ??

My WIN 10 Insider 15058 accepted the 15.2.0.1020 Driver after several attempts. Much, much faster now !!

 

Question: As of October 14th, 2020, my iTunes music library is 185.15 GB. Should that leave enough space for a new 256 GB SSD Windows laptop to run smoothly?

Got you. I'll stick with my Dell Inspiron 7558 for now. Windows laptops with 500 GB hard disk drives aren't common in Oct. of 2020 like they were when I got it from dell.com in March of 2016. I'll wait for 512 GB SSD Windows laptops to be at any physical
BJ's Wholesale Club. Alternatively, I can get a 512 GB SSD MacBook Pro on top of my Dell Inspiron 7558. Lots of family members and close friends love their Apple products. I've always loved both Microsoft and Apple since I was a kid.
