Yep, Cortana is completely turned off as are the Search window and Taskview buttons in the taskbar. I have no use for any of those.

Just finished building my new system about a month ago. With 8.1, my boot time was about 13 seconds. That's the way it stayed right up until I installed Windows 10 last week. After getting tired of the bugs in 10 (mainly my start button not responding), I rolled back to 8.1. Now my boot time is over a minute of just sitting at a black screen, and when it finally loads to my login screen, my USB mouse takes another 30 seconds before it starts working.

Is this something I can fix? If I had known rolling back from 10 would screw up my system like this, I'd not have done it.

I disabled bluetooth already. Fast boot is able. I defragged the disk after upgrade(from 8.1 pro). I already disabled unnecessary services and startup items but still very very slow boot-up.. It freezes before lock screen and also after you log in taskbar is not accessable for a few minutes and some desktop icons are not loaded in that time. So only one thing that useful for me after upgrading to windows 10 and that was Windows + alt + R *Smile) Recording game videos.. Otherwise windows 10 is not a proper operating system right now...

Looks like we have different issues in this thread. Some of you have problems while booting and some (me included) have problems during shutdown. They might not have the same causes.
Meanwile, I have replaced my Bluetooth mouse with a wireless mouse and my system is a breeze. Still would prefer to use the Bluetooth mouse. Dell promised to remotely troubleshoot my notebook later on today. Will post if a fix appears.

yeah maybe different issues but there is a main issue that our pc's are not as good as before. Windows 10 was good for me while i was using technical previews but after upgrade it is not usable for me. Maybe we need clean install but we are afraid of losing some data.

You think you all got it bad? I'm experiencing this too, but I kid you not when I say that I get the Windows logo and spinning icon before 45 MINUTES of black screen, on average. I don't see this on a cold boot, just on restarts. It's annoying to say the least, but downright death to productivity or game time if new software or updates need to be installed.

Recently upgraded direct from Win7 64 Home premium to Win 10.

Basically everything seems OK .... other than shutdown.

Booting is about the same, if not a tad quicker, than Win7 ... and comes in at about 40secs. But shutting down, that used to be about 10 to 15 secs, is now in the regions of 90secs.

Updates? Nope .... this happens if I shut down after a long period of use, reboot (that should have taken care of any updates!), then immediately shut down again.

    Any thoughts, anyone?

Try turning on or off fast startup.
also check registry. go to key
    HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management

and check if ClearPageFileAtShutdown is 1. if it is 1 change it to 0.

NOTE: If none of these works change back them to default.

    Ah - sorted!

Clear Page File was 0 ... left at that.

Disabling Fast Startup was the key.
Shutdown is now as it used to be! Yay!

Interestingly ... Startup is only 2 seconds slower with Fast Startup disabled. So a real result!

    Thanks!

(Interestingly, as a bonus, this also led me to where I could add the Hibernation option back to the Power Menu. Rarely use ... but like it to be there for when I do want to use!)

May not be your problem ... a friend cured his SERIOUSLY slow startup by not having his Samsung SSD encrypted.
    Good luck!

  13. Windows 10 - slow startup after restart only

I am having this issue right now. When I say slow, I mean, I clicked "restart" about 2 hours ago. I'm still seeing the "Restarting" message with the spinning dots on the ugly puke-green screen. How long does one wait for this before force-rebooting the machine?? I upgraded from 8.1 last night - desktop. All went fine (till now)..... *Huh

  14. Since I found this forum when I was searching for the solution to my slow startup, I wanted to reply with what worked for me. My computer did a fast boot taking less than 20 seconds, but when I restarted it took around 90 seconds.

I tried several different solutions described here and elsewhere, but what finally worked was to go into the device manager and disable my "Trusted Platform Module 2.0" which was listed under "Security Devices".

The reason I thought of disabling the trusted platform module was because it had a little exclamation point next to it. When you opened the device properties, it said "The device cannot start. (Code 10). A protocol error was detected between the driver and the device." I may have eventually been able to fix whatever was keeping the device from starting and thereby fix my issue with the slow start, but I didn't really care about the security device, so I just disabled it instead.

I'm guessing that others who have the slow startup issue might have other devices in the device manager that are malfunctioning. My advice if you're having slow startup is to take a look at your device manager and see if there are any devices that have been noted as having an issue. You can then try to temporarily disable them and see if it makes a difference. If it does make a difference, then you can decide if you want to take the time to resolve the issue with the device or just keep it disabled.

  15. I had a desktop that was performing descent but I wanted to give it an upgrade. I introduced SSD to it and did a clean install. I did have some difficulty after installing it when I place the old hard drive back in to get the data off of it. One of the issue was that the old HHD became the primary drive and it kept booting into it. Eventually, I was able to get it set up the way I want EXCEPT...the computer boots REALLY REALLY SLOW...like almost 5 minutes before the Windows Splash screen pops up. Some times the CPU fan spins at such a high rate, I move away from the computer *Sad Once it boots, the computer behaves well as far as I can tell. I upgraded the BIOS and I am guessing it is at this level where I am having issues. Luckily, I have an identical computer at work so I took all the pictures of the settings. I plan to "match" the computer at home. Meanwhile, I am looking for suggestions as to what I can do to make the computer boot at a normal speed - I can live with 1 minute but not 5 minutes. I know 1 min is slow itself but...
