Windows 10: Windows 10 Spatial Sound - USB-C Earbuds only work when it is enabled. Why is this / How to...

I have a pair of USB-C earbuds with a built in in-line mic on them. I can use the earbuds either as ouput OR input, but not both. The mic will work when I use my laptop speakers as the output, but stop working when I set it to the earbuds. Turning on Spatial Sound (dolby atmos for headphones) allows both to work, however. What is causing this? I don't particularly like spatial sound when using Discord so I'm hoping to figure out why.

Spatial Sound

Hi,

The Spatial Sound feature is available in Windows 10 but by default, it has been disabled. To enable it, follow the steps below:

• In the notification area, right-click on the sound icon.
• In the context menu, click on Playback devices.
• Select your playback device and then click on Properties.
• Click on the Spatial sound tab.
• Select the Spatial sound format you want to apply.

I followed the instructions but when I got to #4 spatial sound said off and there was no other info or any way to turn it on. I hit return to default but that did nothing. Please help. my earphones are off .
