Windows 10: Windows 10 start menu still freezes

You can try some of the troubleshooting tips that were posted earlier in this thread. Other than that I can't think of anything else. It seems as though Windows 10 and the last big update had some issues with 3rd party apps. Especially AV's and anti-Malware apps.

 

Just registered to say thanks to those who helped here in a selfless way.

I did safe boot : start menu ok
msconfig and the steps : reinstalled trend micro, uninstalled sandboxie, it may be because of windows defender forcing the reinstall with the windows update ?

That answer would have to come from someone smarter than me. I was advised to un-install 3rd party security software and go from there. I don't run a sandbox program as Acronis True Image has one built into it's tools section, called Try and Decide. I just run Bitdefender and Windows Defender together and that is enough security for me. I think Windows 10 gets it's feelings hurt from too many AV's running at startup...Lol... I removed third party apps (except basically Photoshop) and I don't have third party ant-virus and I have this problem still. I exhausted all options I can think of. The problem is deeper than third-party apps.

 

It seems like randomly uninstalling any software fixes the issue for a while and then it returns.

 

You were right, it came back.... Very random... any idea ? Antivirus ?

 

Mine froze this morning , I think when the clock reset itself to standard time - had to restart the computer

 

Go to Settings -> Accounts -> Sign In Options and turn off "Use my sign-in info to automatically finish setting up my device after an update or a restart". This appears to prevent the windows start menu hang from happening.

 

^ This is the secret sauce. Works for me and I had wracked by brain - a stupid new setting.

Crikey!! I think this solution has worked for me!

I've only experienced this problem of the Start menu becoming unresponsive (along with Cortana), twice this week after having no problems for a whole week after installing the FCU (1709) along with the latest Cumulative Update. The problem just suddenly appeared out of nowhere.

With me though, the Start menu was unresponsive after a cold boot. Like when I shut down the PC before bed and switch on again in the morning. Restarts funnily enough, were not affected by this Start menu thing. Only after a complete Shut Down and subsequent Boot from a cold start.

How come this has worked?? I've never touched that setting before and FCU worked fine for a week It didn't switch on by itself.I don't get it.

I hope this is not a band-aid temporary fix though so I'll see what happens over the next couple of days after having a few more subsequent Shut-Downs and re-boots from Cold.
