    Windows 10 Subscription Plan

    Hi there

Any subscription based OS'es I'd use alternatives wherever possible -- for example even XP will run indefinitely on a VM - if it does what I need then I'd just run the appropriate NON subscription Windows OS on a VM.

I actually LIKE Office preview 2016 but if it were to "Morph" into Office 365 and become subscription I'd find the last Windows OS that Office 2010 will still work on and run that as a VM indefinitely. VMware workstation / Player and VBOX run on LINUX and can run the SAME VM that your Windows Host can run too and of course Linux is FREE open source and ceretainly non subscription based.

Corporates who pay for service / maintenance contracts is something else --I'm discussing HOME users here.

Photoshop I have the last non subscription based one CS6 and I'm also looking at KINGSOFT OFFICE as an alternate perhaps to Ms Office in the future if I need an alternate.

You can't compare an OS or Software with subscription services like NETFLIX or SKY SPORTS - these are purely consumption based services - like utilities. However with an OS you are using it for CREATING content or services for others (your workplace for example) to consume.

@groze - agree just because it's free doesn't always mean it's worth having -- although W10 seems passable so far. Remember "There's no such thing as a Free Lunch". !!!

    Cheers

I also worry about public libraries want to use windows 10, they may switch to apple. Reason, they couldn't afford a subscription model even for just for the staff. The library get its fund from local taxes or donated money. No one want taxes to go up. This one library that about 40 minutes away runs completely on donation and membership fee, no taxes are used.

The isp won't like subscription based operating systems if it causes loss of customers.

Only time I would consider subscription, is the computer is actually leased to me, they would be responsible for upgrades, repair and replacement of the device. The cost would have to be reasonable, so I could still afford internet service

And your point is what exactly? You should pay for the library? Microsoft should pay for the library? Everyone should pay for the library? The library should pay for itself as if by magic? Microsoft should give free licenses if they want to?

With the tight budges most public libraries have I really doubt they will switch to any Apple product., Most of the people that use them are more familiar with Windows to begin with.

I guess your public libraries are funded differently in France.

We have three types (I am not counting school & colleges)
State taxes funded, that usually the state library
    County taxes funded.
    Membership fee and Donations.

And what makes you think that they can afford to move to Apple products?? And what about the transition for members to learn how to use OSx?? Windows is in libraries to stay.

Why are people so dead set against Office 365? I don't have it (my different machines have Office 2007, 2010 & 2013) but I've looked at the Office 365 subscription model and it looks like a pretty good deal to me: For $9.99/month you get licenses for 5 PCs, 5 tablets and 5 phones (AND not or), 1TB of online storage for each of 5 users and 60 Skype minutes for each of 5 users. You can also pay $6.99/month for 1 PC, 1 Tablet and 1 phone, 1TB of online storage and 60 Skype minutes.

With the subscription, you'll automatically get upgraded from Office 2013 to Office 2016 when it's available. If I didn't already have Office installed on my personal machines I would go for Office 365.

Where is the good deal. I am using Office 2007 since 2007 and paid $129 at the time. With $7 per month I would have already paid $672. That's a funny "Good deal".

  10. Maybe some individuals can afford $7 per month but would find it difficult to find $129

What version of Office 2007 do you own?

Actually I do notice these things (sad ******* I am, but if you are in the queue you have to look at something).

In my public library where I live in Nice, everything is Lenovo. Screens, keyboards, little desktop PC's to scan my bar-code. The lot.

Someone got a little backhander I guess. However taking books, CD's, using the internet etc is free as it should be in any civilized society. I don't want to discuss politics though.

Interestingly the forum software changed a not very rude word I wrote (well I didn't think so, it was my about my relationship with my parents anyway) to ****** and then crashed IE11.

Give me a break. Are you telling me that there are people that would rather pay $672 over the years than $129 one time. A bank loan would be a lot cheaper.

I have Home and Student for 3 PCs. I also have the 2010 version for 3 PCs and that cost the same.

Sure. I use 2010 but I'd love to pay $7 a month to get a nice new gray skin. Really - it is worth it. Of couse the fact I can allow 5 other people to use it too isn't interesting to me.

It is a shame Outlook 2013 doesn't work very well at the moment though or I'd be all over it. Good deal - just wake me up when it works *Sleep

  14. That's exactly what I'm saying, i don't use Office 365 myself but maybe you should ask 1 of the millions of users that have signed up to the subscription model, maybe they like the idea of having the latest and greatest version on all their devices along with the storage and skype without trying to find money upfront.

I simply made the point that some may not be able pay that amount upfront but can afford the monthly cost.

Whatever the reason may be, it clearly works for some.

I use office 2013 and haven't had any issues at all, is there a specific issue you face?

Yes. Putting all my mails in my combined inbox without having to click around to make sure would be nice.

The 2016 (OK not 2013) preview I tried just didn't alert me. I had to manually check.

    2010 combined inbox works perfectly.
