Can't create a system image in Win10, error 0x80780038

I have been unable to create a system image in Windows 10 on my D drive (a partition in C due to the error 0x80780038, "the shadow copy is on another drive". I followed the suggestions from Luis DiegoUlate
in Windows 10 System Image Backup 0x80780038 error. This did work once, however I had to reinstall Windows 10 due to a nasty hijack of the computer
and now with the new install the screen in System Protection has changed. I can't find the Activate Protection screen he talks about. Also in his answer that screen is in Spanish and I don't read Spanish. Please help.

 

Windows 10 System Image Backup 0x80780038 error

Hi, I've upgraded my Dell XPS 13 laptop from Windows 8.1 Pro to Windows 10 Pro. It's a perfectly normal installation but when I create a system image backup on a separate partition, right at the end when it goes to create its Shadow Copies it reports this
error.

The backup failed... the specified backup storage location has the shadow copy storage on another volume (0x80780038)

It's sorted itself out now and I've successfully completed the backup, but I wanted to mention it here as I couldn't find any information about it online.

If you're reading this because you're experiencing this error, shut down any other apps that might be using your hard disks and/or try a restart.

 

Windows 10 System Image Backup 0x80780038 error

Same problem! This is a new out of the box HP X360 (Originally with win 8.1 home) freshly upgraded to Win 10 home.

Made backup system restore of the original HDD containing the win 8.1 and the other associated HDD volumes.

Upgraded to win 10 home, installed MS Office 2013 SP1, Adobe Reader DC, Mozilla, and Java.


Now to make a fresh image of the new system and …. now this error.

Performed:

cleanmgr.exe, deleted all restore points, turned system protection on and off and on, attempted windows backup to include system image, SFC/scannow, chkdsk/f,
WSReset.exe. dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth, Powershell, VSSAdmin delete volume shadow copies /all. And lastly restarted many many times.

The powershell

Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers |Where-Object {$_.InstallLocation -like "*SystemApps*"} | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

Powershell...Did not complete without errors, the instructions were not understood or something to that nature. I just copied and pasted the instructions into the powershell cmd.

Reinstalled win 10 and repeated all above fixes again!

Still there is the same error!!

It does appear when mounting the image as VHD the folders are there, at least on the C drive image. The other volumes are uncertain.

I mounted \\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy6
using the “mklink” cmd. But I cant explore it. “the media is right protected?” I Cannot get the permissions changed.

If aftermarket software can make hassle free images why Microsoft cant is beyond comprehension!
