I would prefer that also. At least you know files are being loaded and the install isn't frozen.

    Hi there

So long as it has a Progress Bar (or other progress indicator) then it's fine by me.

I don't like those oversimplified installs that just tell you when it's ready -- especially if you have one of those machines where you can't see Disk activity either. Otherwise whatever Ms come up with as far as automated install is OK - but it must have re-startable features if for example the install fails half way through (for example you run out of HDD space or Partition too small).

I don't mind just letting it run - I can go away and have a beer etc --but also I want it to work even IF NOT CONNECTED TO THE NET.

    Cheers

You could see where in the process where it borked at, instead of something happened when the install fails.

That's true and it would be more helpful when you try to fix the issue if you know where it broke. Never thought of that. Thanks for pointing that out.

  5. On newer PC's with the one time quick boot BIOS menu option its not. I can hit the esc key on my laptop and boot from my thumb drive for that one boot up. On the next boot it goes back to the BIOS default, my hard drive. I know what your talking about though, in the past you would have to go in and change the boot order manually, and have to switch it back again (or take the CD/DVD out) on the first reboot so the install wouldn't start all over again.

    AFAIC, that should be mandatory.

As for the install graphics, I don't care what they look like, so long as I
can see, in reasonable detail, exactly what's going on.

A green bar/circle and a percentage just doesn't 'do it' for me.

  7. I agree. I'm not willing to admit to the number of times I've either stopped something, or been tempted to, because there was no indication that anything was happening. Anything that keeps you aware of progress (and ideally of problems too) could help that majority of people who don't do many installs so don't know what to expect.

Off topic, the neowin website. Is anyone else having trouble loading the comments If not, I will ask over at windows 7? I tried different browsers, I find Opera is the only one that loads the comments. I.E. , Firefox, Google Chrome no comments load. Opera loads the comments. I even enabled Java. All browser are 32 bits. My system is clean. I know the routine.

I think so.. well I hope it is. I could use some information when the update is taking place so I know it hasn't died.

    Thank you,
I think it internet service related. Some how the comments are blocked through my isp except for Opera. Very odd. It could be my router. I think I will ask over at the windows 7 forum.

I can live with any graphic that show continuous activity i.e. the system has not crashed.
Previous percentage bars etc. often appeared to stall for a several minutes at various places say 17% then jump to say 31% climb steadly then stall and jump again. I kept placing the pointer on the bar to see if it was moving.
The other issue was between stages when it switched to a black screen for maybe a couple of minutes.
I guess this latest one will do the same thing.
I don't relax when it appears to have crashed; maybe I am just to impatient.
I was happy with the moving dots to show that it had not frozen.

One of the reasons I like seeing the files load in command prompt. For Windows to estimate remaining time it's very complicated and in accurate, because it depends on hardware, so the green strip or circles with % are basically meaningless, just watch Defender download and install an update: the strip stays white at 0%-then jumps suddenly to installed(theis is only when it's a couple of MB, GB has a little "action".
