OK, I'm currently running Windows 10 on my laptop an in trying to do the update either by Windows Update, or through the Media Creation Tool disc (the disc created by MCT), the installation process fails. It doesn't hang or stop, it just simply fails. With the disk I got all the way to the screen where it asks to save files and folders, I click yes... somewhere in there the process failed and I got this message...

Windows 10 Threshold 2 (November Update) Installation Problems [IMG]

Trying it through Windows Update gives this message...

Windows 10 Threshold 2 (November Update) Installation Problems [IMG]

Through the Windows Update the system goes through the motion of downloading and attempting to do the update, after a certain point in the process I get the above message.

This is an i7 machine with a 4gig of memory and a true 256 SSD drive with 60gig of free space on C-drive. And for the record, the laptop came with Windows 8 x64 Pro installed, but I did a clean install when 8.1 was released so the system is not old enough to have compatibility issues... at least hardware wise. At any rate it's currently running Windows 10 without issue, but for some odd reason it won't let me upgrade to TH.

    Suggestions?

You should have some logs in $Windows.~BT\source\panther\ and/or C:\Windows\panther\ called setuperr.log and setupact.log. Look at the error one before the activity...

If nothing found there have a look around these other locations https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/927521

If you'd like to upload them check them for personal info first. I can't remember exactly what is in them - probably only your user name and possibly your IP.

This is weird. About half way thru Preparing to install, Windows presented a message that I did not have enough space left on my HDD? Told me to do check disk or delete some programs or connect an external hard drive of at least 10GB. I deleted my Office 365 and it is continuing. This is a 8.1 to 10 upgrade. Will post final results at the end, what ever that might be.

That happened to me and the external disk method didn't work. I deleted some programs like you and it then continued and completed fine once past that screen.

Hoping that this will not turn into a mess. W8.1 had 4 partitions on a 30GB drive, Expect W10 to add to it?? I will be satisfied to delete the W8.1 partitions as I have no intention of returning to 8.1. Sorting which partition belongs to what OS could be troublesome?? So far, install is progressing. Tx for conformation of same problem. IF it is messy, will just do a clean install.

Windows 10 Threshold 2 (November Update) Installation Problems

Thanks. I'm not sure what I'm looking for, but I may windup doing a clean install. Anyway I just tried the Windows Update route again and this time the update went through the entire process, even telling me to re-boot. I did the reboot and saw the system installing and updating files before presenting me the log-in screen. When I logged in and checked versions I see the upgrade still hasn't taken, and Windows Updates still offers the same thing all over again. It's as though I'm stuck in a perpetual loop now.

With that, I may just wind up doing a clean install on this machine. Had absolutely no issue with the my desktop using the MCT disk.

Update: No mess, 2 partitions, 10 installed and running. Did a check disk, wiped previous system, some slight configuring to do. It went smooth, 1.5 hrs total.

  10. That support page there is mainly for the versions older then 8 and 8.1 being intended for Vista, 7, and Server 2008. The better page would be for 8.1 being the closest to 10 since none are found for 10 at the present unless on TechNet or MSDN. Windows Setup Log Files and Event Logs

You are trying upgrade only using two of the four options available with those two failing suggesting you either need to boot live from 10 media and select either Upgrade or Custom for a full clean install or right click on the "Windows.iso" once downloaded and saved to the drive using the updated MC tool and see the iso mounted to run the setup.exe file. Something is interferring likely your firewall if 3rd or the av program if not something else running in the background if you have enough drive space available to perform the upgrade not update.

I think this is precisely where everyone is getting a bit confused since you still have to plan an upgrade type install or either save the file to disk or see the updated media created.. If you have a storage internal or external plugged in that will gum thing up a bit! Found that out during the first day! The clean install of course is always the preferable choice!

As I stated I already tried the disk, but it still fails. At this point in time I'm thinking a clean install is the route to go. I also said I used the same disk on my desktop without issue. But as you noted, something is preventing the laptop from "upgrading"

I just need to figure out what because I certainly have the hard drive space. Looking at my windows.old folder on my desktop reveals the file there to be 15gig, and my laptop has way less programs and stuff installed on it so you would think 60 gig of free space is enough.

BTW I use NAV for my virus scanner on both systems, and like the desktop, disabled it when doing the upgrade. The desktop was successful, the laptop was not, so...

Anyway it's not of critical importance so when I get the time I'll wipe the drive and do a clean install and be done with it.

    Thanks.

  12. Can you boot from a flash drive or are you lacking that option? Occasionally you can and will run into bad optical media and sometimes an entire container has to be tossed! This is likely one of the main reasons besides the need to upgrade media for hand helds as well as the pc platform in changing from dvd disk sets to read only protected flash drives. This started back with Vista/7 first seeing usb keys.

Here on one laptop I wiped everything literally following not only the initial upgrade but two consecutive clean installs and then couldn't work with the factory partitions in seeing a second backup partition created for the single drive only model. Since hardly anything would go on it a small place for local storage plus a partial backup to have on hand was the idea. Following the wipe the 3rd clean install went on and now will need to see the TH2 replace the 10240 rtm once again!

Now the word of advice that is now being seen from MS too with the install bug being reported by many with the TH2 build is being sure you have everything extra unplugged during the upgrade or clean install. No phone plugged into charge or nothing else like any flash drive or external HD, camera, smart phone. etc. since the 10 installer will get "confused" on where to put things like the boot files and temp install folders! Found that one out on the first day when I had the pair of storage drives plugged in which resulted in crash to the desktop with or without any error screen or even a BSOD on one attempt!

Someone posted this latest Softpedia report which is what I have been conveying about the need to review the clean install and upgrade guides here at 10F! Here's a good chunk of that report to quote here from: How to Fix Windows 10 Threshold 2 Freezing During Install - Softpedia

Skipping the instant online upgrade should have been the advice there not use the MC tool's immediate upgrade option which can see problems of all sorts from it simply being on the web. One little server glitch and CCCCRRASSHHH! The mount with a right click and upgrade can work out when seeing the ISO created and saved locally and the new updated MC tool since the old should now be tossed will see the two flavored two edition 5.48gb "Windows.iso" file downloaded and saved to the drive or removable media if you have an extra flash drive beside the install key onhand.

Anther option for the online upgrade method isn't even with the MC tool but another one MS came out with. That would be the "GetWindows10-sds_________.exe" file spotted on one W10 page you can try but would still be the upgrade not clean install method seen there. In fact when going to wipe any OEM primary off and wanting to avoid seeing the System Reserved created by the WIndows installer going back to Vista there I will simply boot live with the other OS's drive tools to insure only a couple of mbs too small are left unallocated for the changeover if ever needed from MBR to GPT or vice versa which would mainly before larger storage drives to come.

    My reply in red.

Thanks. Even though I might appear to be shooting down ideas, I very much appreciate you taking the time out to put forth those ideas as it gives me something to think about that I may have overlooked.

    Appreciate that *Smile

I'd be happy to look at the logs if you like - can't really suggest anything else as it would be just guessing - you seemed to have covered most things.

As it happens I'm planning to do a clean install today as there are a few niggley problems which only happen with upgrade - this for example On updated to 1511 machines gpedit.msc reports namespace conflict - Windows 10 Forums

Perhaps clean install is best bet (assuming it doesn't fail for the same reason). Best of luck either way.
