Windows 10 treats the private network as a public network.

Windows blocks all connections on the same subnet. Windows will connect to any computer/server on the other side of the default route/router. This isolated tunneling through the resident subnet would be something I would expect from a public WiFi connection.

The windows settings are set on private network, subnet mask/broadcast address is /24 and correct for the subnet.

The computer is discoverable and visible to other computers on the subnet.

The computer also can see all other machines on the same subnet.

    Secure Password sharing is off

The network has been reset in the settings as well as the command line

IPv4 was set to preferred then IPv6 was disabled

Networking has been tried with the firewall on and off with identical results.

This computer was allowing connections and able to connect to other machines. But now, nothing.

ALL CONNECTIONS CAN BE MADE ON OTHER SUBNETS

NO CONNECTIONS CAN BE MADE ON THE SAME SUBNET

The only changes that have been made is the router, Ubiquity Edge Router X, was replaced with a Linux server. All other networking devices are just ethernet switches. None of them smart. All other computers/devices work perfectly with two Windows 10 machines being the only exceptions.

    :)

Set Network Location to Private or Public in Windows 10

Hi Brink and thank you for the welcome Windows 10 treats the private network as a public network. :)

I tried what you suggested but when doing this, i noticed that whenever i am connected to my VPN, the Windows network shows up as "unidentified network" instead of network 1,2,3 or whatever. So when i went into regedit and looked for networks, i found some but none called unidentified.
There was one network with the value 0 so i changed it to 1 (private) but after checking, my VPN connection still shows as public.

I am not really sure why it says unidentified network in Windows when i am connected to the VPN but it seems that this is the cause for the problem. If i could only find the VPN network in the list of networks in regedit, i think i would be able to change the value to 1.

Hmm..not sure how to proceed with this. Any ideas?
