    32) list partition
    33) exit
    34) chkdsk /r C:
If the drive letter is different from C: in step #18 change C: to this drive letter. This may take many hours and typically displays ETA.

    36) (Reopen command prompt > administrator: X:\windows\system32\cmd.exe > X:\sources> type:

    41) bootrec /rebuildbcd
    42) (reboot)
If at any time the repair is successful and you are able to boot normally, then consider the repair fragile and backup all files to another drive or to the cloud and and make a backup image using Macrium (free edition):
Macrium Software | Macrium Reflect Free
There are more steps pending the results of the above steps.
Please make sure that a camera or smart phone camera is used to take pictures and post images into the thread using one drive or drop box or google share links.

  2. Thanks for the advice.

Unfortunately I can't access command prompt from my windows system, only via the media creation tool or windows PE which does not bring up my graphic drivers.

This appears to be a really common issue now, as I have a second PC and the same thing has happened just this afternoon!

Black screen with white mouse cursor, and all I can bring up is the different screen options down the right hand side by using windows key and P on the keyboard.

So this is the second PC in my office this has happened to in the space of three days. I believe it must be after one of the updates.

It has put me behind 3 days now for my business as I have a home office. If I can't get the windows 10 back I am looking to go back to windows 7. I need a stable operating system.

I called Microsoft support in Australia and they tried to palm it off on my motherboard not being compatible! Sure one PC has a older motherboard but was working fine up until 3 days ago, the other is windows 10 compatible and is a system used for video rendering so its high spec.

Even the windows media creation tool is awful. Pretty much useless as all I can use is command prompt.
The repair functions do not work, the system restore does not work...

I am going to try to fix this without completing wiping my drive an re-installing all my programs... Another day of work lost!

    Really disappointed with windows 10.

    Frustrating to say the least.

Either way I am very appreciative of any help and advice, hopefully this can also help others who have the same issues.

    Thanks

    Steve

  3. @Bastet

Unfortunately I have two PCS with the black screen and mouse issue, even after trying the recovery procedure and getting to the options for "Safe mode" there are a few options and I have tried them all...all I get is the same black screen with a lower resolution mouse but no safe mode!

Its like a vicious circle that seems to be un fixable without getting into command prompt!

This is getting so common now its just not funny, the net is riddled with people with the same issue.
At least there should be an option to get into safe mode and do as you said, remove the graphics driver and replace with a previous version...but most can't get that far.

I am going to start a new thread as suggested zbook.

I have taken photos of my screen as suggested, hopefully there is success so it can help others get out of this black screen with cursor issue. Its more a curse. than anything!

  4. windows 10 update 1709 black screen with mouse after login

    Hi zbook,

Most certainly appreciate your advice with this as I now have two PCS with the same black screen and white cursor!

I have created a new thread at and taken some images Black Screen with Mouse Cursor with continual repair loops - Windows 10 Forums

I was not too sure on step 36) and 37) getting to admin rights for it?
As I tried previously before this using the bootrec/fixboot and it comes up "access denied"

What file location should I be running the bootrec /fixmbr
    bootrec /fixboot
    bootrec /scanos
    bootrec /rebuildbcd ?

There only thing I can think of to why this has happened is either the latest update of windows 10 screwed both PCS or the Nvdia drivers as they would have updated at the same time!

The problem is I can't get into safemode to remove the latest drivers...as it will not let me in.

And I have no idea on how to replace a driver through command prompt.

Once again I really appreciate your assistance with this and any advice on how to prevent it from happening again in the future as I really can't afford to have the downtime for my work, as I work from home on PC.

    Thanks and enjoy your weekend

    Steve

  5. Bastet Win User
There’s only the other option of creating a new user.
From the black screen press ctrl alt del to open task manager -> file -> run new task type "cmd.exe" without quotes, and check the admin privileges box. in cmd: type: net user /add [username] [password] username and password without [] press enter, then type: net localgroup administrators [username] /add https://www.reddit.com/r/techsupport...s/dx8r5b1/Once logged into the new account you should be able to access the old account’s folders to transfer personal files over to the new account.

  6. unfortunately ctrl alt del do not work with both of my black screens. I have tried numerous key combinations and its just stuck with the black screen. The only thing I can get is windows key plus P brings up the various screen options on the right hand side.

But after making various selections over and over as many suggest to fix, it still remains the same..

Unfortunately even with the media creation tool.... I can only get into CMD... Even the safe mode options just bring up the same black screen with a slightly larger cursor!

If I could get into safe mode I could remove the nvidia driver and see if that is causing it but I can't even get that far. This is a common occurrence as I have googled and searched for hours now, my only real option is to scrap windows 10 and go back to 7 as this was a lot more stable for me.

I can't afford the downtime with all of this as it seems like the windows media creation tool is poorly build as it does not even get into basic safe mode!

Not sure but I am thinking windows 7 fresh install.
