Windows 10: Windows 10 Update 1803 takes forever to install

I already know the answer to the question I'm asking - how in gods name can a 'feature update' take so long to actually install on a freshly formatted Core i7 HP notebook that in all other respects performs fine? It stays on 80% for 1/2 hour, then 81%, then 82% for similar times. The drive is thrashing away like mad so presumeably the 'clever coder' is checking and rechecking every damn thing again and again - I just want to know 'why?'.

Why can other operating systems' coding departments can make updates that install in minutes (and are checked and work).

Why do we have to put up with this nonsense from Microsoft?

Why, after decades of the same nonsense do we put up with it?


I only do because I still support home users who I haven't convinced to switch to an iPad or Android tablet.

I only do because there are small business owners who have to run Windows software they pay through the nose for and are too afraid to go to a cloud based solution.


I don't on my two notebooks as they are running CloudReady (I'm writing this on one of them). They boot in under 20 seconds and are ready to use as soon as I sign into my Google account. I use Google docs, sheets and all the other online sites for 99% of what I still need to run my business. I'm switching to an online accounting system soon and that will be the last Microsoft-based software I'll ever use myself again.


I have to retain one Windoze machine to be able to assist those who haven't abandoned the platform as yet. This is a recent Corei5 system that now takes 2 minutes to boot (and I don't mean the desktop is there - I mean the background crap that continues which is it actually starting up. The monthly 'feature updates' that change things I dont want changed, like the inane 'settings' nonsense - which aims to dumb down every setting (but note how you still go to a control panel applet to make proper changes?). The only reason I have been able to keep the same mouse and keyboard is because it's too easy to throw cordless ones against the wall (but I have smashed a few keyboards in the last couple of years in frustration and anger at having to put up with the .... nonsense.


Thank christ I'm retiring now and every notebook I buy from now on will be a Chromebook. I might even try a Macbook - - no, I don't think so!


End of rant. No M$ techs need comment - I don't need to be told to 'restart the system' or any other inane crap I see here in 'answer' to well written questions from other users. Don't bother. Just know that your time as M$ employees (if you are one) won't be for much longer.


I give Microsoft 5 years - well Windows anyway. The shift to a 'services company' is the signal they are getting out of an industry that Bill started but subsequent idiots have ruined... Google is so far ahead of you now that even that won't save the company.

I am having a issue with this update,. I fallow the steps via windows update, DL the update, shows install. ask me to reboot pc. after reboot its start the update install pc reboot several times. On the last time, I get a message saying" Restoring windows to previous version". Then it takes me back to windows, and i get a message update could not be installed.
In windows update-control panel it shows update waiting for reboot. i click on it and does same thing. after install it restore to previous version. what is going on?
I have disable windows firewall for time being.
