Windows 10 update August 20, 2019 WARNING DELETED FILES

I have version 1093 of Windows 10. On Aug 20, 2019, I got a notice to update windows. Thinking this was just an average update, I clicked on it to go ahead. I have automatic updates turned off, because I have a job and have to get work done and automatic updates are disruptive.

It took SIX hours. When it finally finished I realized I had an entirely new version of Windows 10. So I start trying to rebuild my desktop, All shortcuts and toolbar links were gone. I restored the toolbar links for the programs I use often like Word and Excel.

I went to my Documents and everything was gone. Fighting panic I frantically googled. I searched for files, I looked in Windows.old folder, I tried everything. NO FILES. NO PHOTOS. I had a back up but it was 30 days old because it has been a busy summer.

I had to do a system restore. It took FIVE hours.

I just want everyone to know. Back up before you do this update as you will have to restore your files from backup. Also set aside plenty of time for this to run. I would have liked a little warning before I blew up two days at the office messing around with Windows. If there were a viable alternative to Windows, I would so be there.

PS. I realize the files were not deleted as I was able to recover them with system restore. However, if they aren't easily discoverable by the average user, then they might as well be deleted.

    :)

Windows 10 update August 20, 2019 WARNING DELETED FILES

    Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK
