Windows 10: Windows 10 update error 0x80070057

Discus and support Windows 10 update error 0x80070057 in Windows 10 Installation and Upgrade to solve the problem; I was getting a 0x80070057 error trying to update the Windows 10 May and Oct updates.     Windows 10 update error 0x80070057


    I was getting a 0x80070057 error trying to update the Windows 10 May and Oct updates. I tried many instructions provided, but the error continued on both these. I then did the following:


    Login in with an administrator account.


    Run these steps as told by many tech support threads. You can copy and paste into a batch file.

    net stop wuauserv

    net stop cryptSvc

    net stop bits

    net stop msiserver

    Ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

    Ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old

    net start wuauserv

    net start cryptSvc

    net start bits

    net start msiserver


    Make sure they ALL succeed. Especially the rename of the Software distribution folders. If you run this twice the *.old folders will exist and this will fail.

    Shut down your computer/laptop.

    DISCONNECT ALL HARDWARE including external monitors. I disconnected my laptop's port replicator that I am normally plugged into. [I think, that's what really solved it as I had done all other steps except this!]


    If needed, plug into an external power source.

    Restart your computer/laptop.

    Login with an administrator account.

    Exist ALL running apps from the Taskbar & System Tray icons as best you can, Some you just can't shut down. Kill them, if you like. No problem.



    Download and run the latest version of the Windows Update Assistant and hope for the best!
