  1. Windows 10 Update Failure for 1703 and 1607

Hello! So I've been trying since forever to update my Win10 ProI can Update most Updates just fine except Version 1703 and Version 1607,especially the later one I've been trying since months ago. It all goes fine, downloading the updates and once I'll restart the PC to update it,it gets stuck shortly after 20%~ and reboots telling me in a millisecond about a fatal error and undoing the changes,it goes usually so fast that im not sure what error code it is.https://puu.sh/xY1d1/5312dfb7a4.png is a picture of my Update History.I upgraded the PC from Win 7 Ultimate when Win 10 was free.I have already tried updating via Windows Media Creation tool but it still fails for those two updates. If any more Infos need to be provided let me know.Thank you in advance

    :)

  2. Windows 10, version 1709 update fails at 86% with 0x80004005

I will keep that in mind if I ever get as far as having the Windows Fall Creators Update installed, but so far I'm still on Windows 10 Pro Version 1607 and the Windows Update Program keeps failing doing the update to 1709 without giving any clear indication
    as to why.

Feedback from my laptop supplier tells me they have had 2 other customers experience the same Windows Update bug with persistent failure moving from 1607 to 1709, and apparrently in both those cases updating from 1607 to 1703 and THEN updating from 1703
    to 1709 worked.

So I'm asking how to I get Windows to update to 1703 first? Every attempt I've made, even if I start from pages talking about 1703 still tries to apply 1709 directly.

Problem in updating Windows 10 and Defender

I'm struggling to update Windows 10 and Defender on my back-up laptop. I have multiple failures indicated for updating version 1703 of Windows. (I'm currently running version 1607 on an Acer Aspire S3.) I'm also unable to update Defender. I've had several
failures with error messages indicating a network failure even though the network is stable and running properly on another PC. This triggers Defender to switch off. I'd appreciate suggestions on how to fix these problems

Windows 10 Update Failure for 1703 and 1607

Hi, what is your current Windows build please?
    Windows key + R, winver

From your Update History it appears to be 1511.
And from that it appears updates to 1511 fail, as well as build upgrades.

Please do the following basic checks:
    1. Check your disk
    Hard Disk Sentinel (trial)
    2. Now check your file system:

From an admin command or powershell prompt
[Windows key + X, click command prompt (admin)]
    chkdsk C: /F
Your PC will need to restart.
Post back the result, which you can get after a restart as follows:
Read Chkdsk Log in Event Viewer in Windows 10 Performance Maintenance Tutorials
    or
How to read Event Viewer log for Chkdsk in Windows 10 [Tip] | Reviews, news, tips, and tricks | dotTechdotTech
    or
How do I see the results of a CHKDSK that ran on boot? - Ask Leo!
Make sure the result is clear or fixed- else do not proceed.

From an admin command or powershell prompt
    Please run SFC /Scannow
    and report the result.

    Note:
To post a screenshot please use the Insert Image icon above your post to the left of the video icon. Thanks.

    - like this:

(Note it expands when you click on it).

Please use Minitool Partition Wizard to post a screenshot of your partitions, making sure text is fully visible in every column.

Before attempting a build upgrade, I would recommend you create a Windows disk image (a compressed copy of the used part of the set of partitions comprising Windows) to an external disk. E.g. with Macrium Reflect (free)

Things can go wrong, and you can end up with an unbootable PC. Having an image gives you a second chance.
Note we strongly and repeatedly urge users to use dik imaging routinely, so they have a chance to recover from problems quickly and without technical help- even if their disk fails.

The next major Windows update will be available this week.
If you are using Windows version 1511 you will have another version to try.

Once you complete all of the steps that dalchina posted you can troubleshoot the Panther logs.
Often they need to be decoded or debugged to translate the error codes into useful information.
This could take a lot of time.

If you can back up all of the important files onto another drive or into the cloud you may then have one more option to perform a clean install using a bootable windows 10 iso.

If you definitely want Windows 10 version 1703 you should make a Windows 10 iso before the release of the next version to make sure that you can install the 1703 version.

try tweaking.com 'windows repair', i've used it's repair windows update' option a few times when updates failed. i also had to skip a couple insider fast lane builds that just wouldn't install, tho a later one did. the current 1709 build 17017.1000 prerelease installed without any troubles. the full release for non-insiders should be in a few days...

    Download Tweaking.com - Windows Repair - MajorGeeks

also make sure any third party firewall or antimalware is turned off, and unplug any usb devices.

microsoft also has a update troubleshooter app (settings-update-troubleshoot) you can try first.

Fixing things comes after doing the basic checks- it's clearly an old installation. We don't want to build a house upon sand.

Those are some of the next steps.

Rather than 'Update this PC now', you can use the MCT to 'create media for another PC', either as an ISO or a USB. By default it will create media suitable for the PC running the MCT, if you're running it on another PC make sure you get the right bits (32/64) and language to suit the PC you want to upgrade.

Using either of these to upgrade the PC will, if it fails, pause at a screen showing the error code. This documentation tells you what each code means, and what can be done to correct the problem.

    Thanks.
Your disk looks good, but I can see two problems from your partition screenshot in particular that would be a problem when upgrading.

    1. You don't have enough spare space on C:
Windows.old will be created - about as big as your existing Windows. Plus you need some spare working space- several Gb
    2. There's no unallocated space on your system disk. You should allow at least 500Mb - on that disk, not another. Why? It's quite common for a new Recovery partition to be created.

Before attempting an upgrade, please also do this (as before):
From an admin command or powershell prompt
    Please run SFC /Scannow
    and report the result.

If ok, then I advise you to
    a. create a disk image (we constantly urge people to do this routinely) e.g. Macrium Reflect (free) - Backup Windows - to external storage. Why? Things can go wrong and worst case you could end up with an unbootable PC. This gives you the chance to recover to exactly as you were, quickly, without technical help- even if your disk fails and you need a new one.
    b. disconnect any external peripherals, disable your AV, make sure you have no software modifying your GUI, attempt the upgrade (from normal boot).

Macrium is often recommended on these boards...

Backup and Restore with Macrium Reflect

...the built-in Microsoft imaging can be unreliable/temperamental....

Create System Image in Windows 10

...and even Microsoft have declared it as 'deprecated' in the Fall Creators Update.

Creating a disk image of Windows.
As your disk is ok, and chkdsk passed, Macrium should be able to create a disk image. (It usually can't if the disk is failing/faulty).

    Is SFC failing significant?
That SFC fails (comparing system files with a repository of system files) has nothing to do with whether it will be possible to create a disk image. From that point of view, your system files are just data. Whether the data is consistent or correct is not important to image creation.

Why create a disk image? So if something goes even more badly wrong you should always be able to get back to this point. That's why we constantly and repeatedly urge people to use disk imaging routinely- so they can often rescue themselves from bad situations quickly and without technical help. Even disk failure.

How do you create your first disk image of Windows?
Connect a sufficiently large USB disk (images are compressed- so your first is likely to be a bit more than half the used space you are imaging. Allow a lot more than that for other disks/partitions and differential images ('updates' - sort of). Note most videos and jpgs don't compress further.

    Install and run Macrium Reflect.

Windows 10 Update Failure for 1703 and 1607 [IMG]

Click Backup Windows. In the next window all relevant partitions should be selected.
Carry on to start the imaging process.
