Funny thing is, Windows Defender is reporting a connection failure and yet I'm able to post this.
This reminds me of when they broke Windows 7 Update.

Even though mpcmdrun.exe is telling you that no update is needed, it probably did download the signatures and installed them. Check the update tab inside of Windows Defender and you should notice they are now current and any error returned in Windows Update will now disappear if you recheck for updates.

I've seen this behavior as well. I think, windows defender is updating itself at preset times, perhaps as part of the daily maintenance task. If WU runs before this time, it displays the install error. Some time subsequent to this, W. Defender updates itself. If WU retires the failed update now, the error condition is corrected and disappears. If you happen to look after W. Defender updates and before WU retries, then you see that the failed signature update is indeed installed despite the WU reported failure.

Same problem (Italy). Only one solution works: update manually from Windows Defender. *Sad

I guess it may not be completely fixed.
    Although,
    when I run windows updates,
it says that everything is up to date.

I haven't run WD updates, I'm not going to either.

    I've done all I can, I'm drained.

  6. Yes, that makes sense what you are explaining; however, this all boils down to some guy sitting in a cubicle trying to figure out what part of the Microsoft team to blame for this fiasco as they are spilling their freshly brewed coffee for four days (going on five shortly) to only realize they don't know how it all happened.

Remember earlier in the thread how the Windows Defender member wanted some posters to send their logs in? I looked at my logs by way of administrator command prompt (it isn't like they are cipher coded) and all they detail is timestamps of the error generated but no logistical account of server errors or anything that would instruct a tech guy how to resolve an issue that is generating connection errors.

I appreciate your feedback though. We are alone in this until Microsoft Tech guys stop blaming each other, spilling coffee and just knuckle up and figure out which monkey in the basement with a broken abacus screwed this up.

  9. No. I mean unless you like to gamble with your computers security and none of the workarounds are having any results, then I would always highly advise implementing an antivirus/malware program of some sort. Malwarebytes has a fourteen day free trial the last time I looked, but that is subject to change at any given hour.

  10. Guys... you've been given a couple of ways to update WD manually. Surely you can do it this way until MS fixes the problem. And don't call me Shirley.

Careful what you use in place of Defander to be secure - Malwarebytes is not an antivirus......it is an anti- malware program.

  12. I've used the alternative methods with success; however Windows Defender was throwing out more than just download and installation errors, it was throwing out connection errors as well. See my screenshots in my earlier posts. Some guys were having problems updating through administrator prompt and Windows Update Catalog/Defender resources because of connection errors, not just download or installation errors.

By all means I agree. I merely was suggesting to have those implemented at a minimal requirement versus having nothing at all. Antivirus/Antimalware. I am pretty certain I did mention Antivirus to that post I quoted to that person from Italy.
Malwarebytes had been given reviews that it actually was better than some antivirus programs. I did not fall for those reviews, and have had Panda (antivirus) active for many years now on more important machines than just my daily driver OS to post here.
