Windows 10: Windows 10 Updates broken after update from 1909 to 20H2 - unable to fix 0x80070002 error

Hi,

I've been trying to fix the broken Windows update on my cousin's PC over the weekend. It's stuck in the 0x80070002 condition after the system was updated from 1909 to 20H2, so the build version is 19042.746.

The clock is synced.

There were some errors in the image that were fixed with 'sfc /scannow' and 'dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth'. But the problem remained.

I've also stopped the Windows Update Service and cleaned the download paths. Troubleshooting isn't able to determine the problem either.

However, Windows updates are still stuck in that condition for KB4023057 and KB4601319, the last two cumulative updates. They don't even begin to download apparently as the error comes up almost immediately after they show up in the list.

I've been trying to download the updates from the Windows Update Catalog yesterday, but they keep stating that they can't be installed on the computer, although windows version and architecture both check out (20H2, x64), and even if I download the 2004 or Server version - they're the same file.

Today's Defender definitions update KB2267602 was installed without problems.

Has anyone run into the same problem and was able to fix this? Or is it a problem with the cumulative updates?

2004 update windows 10 error 0x80070002

Hello everyone,

thanks to some of the suggestions here and to some from other sources I have managed to fix the 0x80070002 error breaking up my feature update to 2004.

For completeness' sake and since it may help others, the following steps worked for me.

1. Download Media Creation Tool from Microsoft's official website
2. Create a bootable USB drive with the MCT
3. Boot up from this USB Drive
4. Choose install settings, click 'Next', but on the next screen select "Repair your computer" instead of "Install"
5. Choose "Troubleshoot" -> "Startup Repair" and let it finish
6. Restart into Windows and attempt the usual Windows update

It looks like the BCD on my computer had been damaged by the boot loader (Windows 10 + Recovery partition) and running the "Startup Repair" from the installation USB Drive corrected the errors.

 

Error 0x80070002 when trying to update Windows

I have been having issues for months with Windows 10 updates failing due to Error 0x80070002 on my gaming laptop. The full message reads:

2019-06 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1803 for x64-based Systems (KB4503286) -Error 0x80070002.

I am currently on version 1803 (OS Build 17134.590) and I'm being told "You're currently running a version of windows that's nearing the end of support. We recommend you update to the most recent version of Windows 10 now to get the latest features and security improvements."

I have followed the instructions on Error Code 0x80070002 Fixed – Eassos Step-by-Step Tutorial but this hasn't resolved the problem. Does anybody know how to fix this?
