Windows 10 upgrade 1809 disaster: version 10.0.17763.1 NO SOLUTION OFFERED by Microsoft

i have for the past 5 days experienced black screen of death due apparently to being part of the Windows Insider uograde issue. I did what was apparently sensible. Booting to safe mode worked. System repair did not. Restoring a system restore point from 29/9 has my system in a worse situation. I can now only boot to the command line, but not to safe mode any more.

i spent an hour or so on the phone this morning with a Microsoft rep who eventually informed me that the intermittent green screen stop code Windows Insider window was an indication of a need to reinstall windows.

no problem, until she wanted my Product Key for windows, which i do not have it seems in any email or other system. She said she would wait while I looked but hung up after 5 minutes! I have since wasted 5 hours working through the sensible options. Everything is still on the program drive where it should be. My understanding was that my modern motherboard retained the product key, but i can find no way of extracting it. Just the usual Microsoft complex junk approach.

the data is on various other drives where it should be.

i cannot find a utility that could extract the Product Key.

i am stuck, and can see no point in calling the supremely unhelpful microsoft person who did not listen the first time as to where my system was at but clearly was working through a script for the mindless to take me back through the process I was trying to advise her I had already gone through. As for not offering assistance on how a Microsoft registered user could access his paid for windows operating system, words fail.

can anyone offer any advice about next steps that do not involve dealing with the substandard customer least common denominator approach encountered here?

    :)

Microsoft to push automatic Windows 10 upgrades in 2016

"Microsoft has announced that Windows 10 will be automatically rolled out next year to all users of its older operating systems who have selected to receive updates.

Until now, users of Windows 7 and 8 have needed to register to upgrade to Windows 10. But that's about to change: soon the OS will be listed as an 'Optional Update' and -- from 2016 -- a 'recommended' update that will automatically install itself, if users have opted to receive updates in that way.*Shadedshun :shadedshu:

You can opt out of automatic updates to avoid this, but Microsoftsays that "we strongly discourage this in today’s connected world because of the constant risk of internet threats". You can also change your Windows Update settings to install critical updates but not recommended ones. Although it's still going to be possible to avoid installation, Microsoft seems quite determined for everyone to be using Windows 10 in near future.

The roll-out of reserved updates was initially staggered but, according to Microsoft, now Windows "will automatically kick off the upgrade process once you have made a reservation".

As an intermediate stage, Microsoft says that it will "soon" publish Windows 10 as an optional update, not installed by default, but accessible to all users.

Loophole Lets You Freely Upgrade to Windows 10 After Offer Expiry

Regret not taking advantage of the free upgrade offer to Windows 10? A loophole in the Windows 10 Free Upgrade offer lets you freely upgrade your Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 installations to the latest Windows 10, five months after the free upgrade offer expired. Apparently, Microsoft is keeping the free upgrade offer open to people who use assistive technologies. These could include people who use screen narrators or magnifiers. You can now simply head over to Microsoft Accessibility website, and on checking an undertaking that you do use assistive technologies, avail the free Windows 10 upgrade. Microsoft reportedly isn't checking if you actually use these features.
