    =======================
Thanks to Ztruker for his time and for his taking an interest in my upgrade problem. Very much appreciated.
I would like to report the GOOD news: Upgrade to Windows 10 is now successful, everything works great.
Details and a bit of history:
    1. The Gateway computer was bought new many years ago running Vista (Win 7 did not come out at that time.)
    2. It was upgraded to Win 7 when it came out.
    3. I reserved a copy of Win 10. Tried to upgrade to Win 10 before "Notification", it failed.
    4. After receiving "Notification" from Microsoft, tried to upgrade again. It also failed.
    5. Learned from researching the web, that many computers failed the upgrade contains Nvidia graphics card. Then checked my own computer, and found it also has a Nvidia graphics card - Geforce 9800 GT.
    6. Asked help from this forum, Ztruker sent me the info about the most recent driver of my graphics card.
    7. Actually MS did send me a driver through the "Windows Update" but it failed to install. Downloaded the driver that Ztruker told me - but it also failed to install.
    8. Then later learned from the Nvidia's website, one has to uninstall the existing device driver before installing the new driver.
    9. Not knowing how to uninstall a driver, I googled and found "Go to Control Panel" use Add/Remove program.
    10. So I entered the Control Panel and clicked to uninstall Nvidia driver. Planned to install the driver that Ztruker told me.
    11. When the Control Panel screen came back, the windows update 1.1's Nvidia driver was just installed.
    12. It was automatic and happened so fast.
    13. MS windows update's Nvidia driver is highly likely the same driver that Ztruker told me - it is the most recent one.
    14. Started the upgrade process and the Windows 10 was successfully installed.

Appreciated very much of Ztruker's time and taking an interest on my problem.
(Btw, I emailed Gateway Tech support, never heard from them. Microsoft Answers/Mcrosoft Community is of no help either.)

The bottom Line: One must uninstall the existing Nvidia graphics card device driver first (via Control Panel), otherwise the new device driver will fail to install.

Excellent, glad you got it resolved.

I think this ties in with another post I saw recently where the person simply disabled the Nvidia device under Display adapters then upgraded. The upgrade went perfectly and somewhere during the process a new driver got loaded and all was well.

This is what Nvidia said (about their graphics cards):
Driver files should always be uninstalled before updating to newer drivers …

In response to original post I got around the error during install by choose to only keep personal files, keeping nothing also works.
