Windows 10: Windows 10 upgrade from Windows 7 failed (Samsung Q330)

Can't comment on your upgrade to 64 bit, but I've upgraded to 240G SSD and it's like a new machine, so well worth doing without having to go through the hassle of clean install then reinstalling all your software

 

Hi Geoffers, thanks for your reply, have you changed to SSD before the Win 10 upgrade?

Any advice with regards to the SSD selection (there seem to be so much choice out there)?

I did the SSD upgrade after upgrading to W10, but it doesn't really matter when you do it.

I didn't do too much searching : Currys seemed pretty competitive, so I bought a 240GB Sandisk Ultra-II (currently on sale for £54.99) in a package including an external USB caddy.

Best to use Macrium Reflect to create a backup image of your exisiting drive before you do anything, in case something goes tits-up...*Wink

I then downloaded MiniTool Partition Wizard and shrunk the (right hand) partition size on the HDD so that the disk was slightly smaller than the target SSD size (you can increase the partition size after the install to utilize the whole SSD)

Then, with the SSD in the external USB caddy, run a Macrium Clone to do a sector-by-sector clone to the SSD.

When complete, swap the drives over & it should all work seamlessly (and boots up in seconds!) - if you shrunk your partition size as described above, just increase it to the max
