    Windows 10 upgrades/installs

Why do many/all support people on here give the same dialog for Windows 10 issues? The standard reply seems to be "clean install", no upgrade. All the people who do clean installs don't have any problems.

This was the standard dogma for Windows versions prior to Windows 10, and it was quite understandable. The difference was, it was many years between upgrades. Often five to seven years apart. Often a new Windows version coincided with a hardware upgrade. Users/companies were accustomed to the amount of work required to install/reinstall a new O/S and all the required software. Then you would just need to keep up to date with patches for the next five to seven years. The clean install dogma made perfect sense then.

Now, with Windows 10, the updates are twice a year. If you have the Pro version, you can put off the new version updates for a year. With other work arounds you can get away with 1 1/2 to 2 years, maybe. But this is nothing like the 5 or more years of "upgrade free" use without having to reinstall everything.

I have better things to do with my time than fix everything Windows 10 updates break every 6 months, or even 2 years. Unfortunately, even the upgrades decide to replace perfectly working drivers with something new which doesn't work, or needs to have the manufacturer's full function driver/software installed GPU for example. If I have to do a clean install, besides the drivers I have to reinstall all software again which can be very time consuming to say the least. I certainly don't want to be doing that every 6 months.

My question is, how can any of the support techs I am aware many of you are volunteers, in good conscience tell anybody the reason their windows upgrade didn't work well is because they didn't do a clean install? If that is really a requirement, then why is Microsoft rolling out upgrades every 6 months? Where is the warning from Microsoft saying they will upgrade your PC automatically, but the user is better off to do a clean install and reinstall all programs again.

Microsoft is rolling out upgrades like they are dealing with phones, with known hardware. Not upgrades to unlimited/unknown types of computer hardware, where the chances of successful upgrades may or may not be very good.

How many users of Microsoft O/S are interested in having to do a clean install, complete with installing manufacturer's full function drivers/software and every piece of freeware/paid software they own every 6 months? Any?

Personally, I have already given up that Microsoft will fix this. I no longer buy software that doesn't also work on other O/S like Linux or MacOS. This way I can easily switch to an O/S that requires less time to maintain and be more productive with the software I use.

    :)

Installing Windows 10 on New PC?

I'm going to be building a new PC on Christmas and want to install Windows 10 on it. I have Windows 10 on my current PC, which I installed upgrading from 8.1 with the files on a USB. How do I go about installing a clean copy of Windows 10 on this new PC? I think I recall something about installing it once makes Microsoft recognize your hardware, but since this will be a PC I'm not sure what steps I need to take. Do I need to go 8.1 -> 10 or is there a method of going directly to 10?

  3. Installing Windows 10 using Windows 7 key

Nope, you need to install Windows 10 first and make sure the Windows 7 key is transferred to your Windows account after you've installed Windows 10 (not quite sure how that works). I missed the last step and I could not activate Windows 10 after a re-install... Microsoft seem to have done everything they can to make it a PITA. Also, it's technically too late to do this now anyhow, as the upgrade offer has expired. But KMSPico works quite well...

As for getting rid of Windows, delete the Windows folder.

Windows 10 upgrade problem, no input accepted

I really hate having to come here and ask for help, but I really am stumped. It hurts my geek pride. I have a PC with fairly modern hardware in it. It has a p8p67 pro in it. I have tried upgrading windows 10 on it twice now. Both times I have had the same result.

After windows finishes upgrading it goes to the log in/set up screen. I can't do anything. No keyboard or mouse input is accepted.

I will list some, or hopefully all, of the troubleshooting steps I have tried:
    • Move keyboard and mouse to different USB ports.
    • Try different keyboard or mouse.
    • Restart computer, repeatedly.
    • Google for related issues.
    • Update Bios, because why not.
    • Create boot media and revert to windows 7.
The windows 10 system restore boot media works fine with keyboard and mouse. All USB ports work in windows 7. I don't know what is wrong. I suspect that windows 10 is lacking a driver of some sort, but since the computer accepts no input I have no way of checking for which driver let alone installing it.

Please help me figure this out. If I have to revert back to windows 7 again, I am not going to get it upgraded to windows 10. Thank you in advanced.
