Windows 10 usage continues to rise, but users say no to Edge browser

I did not use IE (regularly; it was always there so that I could check out sites that wouldn't work otherwise) and I see no reason to use Edge. Firefox works, why bother with something else? More seriously, there are two features in Firefox that I find essential: (1) one can selectively erase cookies on browser exit, and (2) one can launch several instances of the browser with different profiles simultaneously.

    Hi there

Sky GO still doesn't work on it and I also optionally like the idea of a menu bar.

For me Firefox and the old IE are my browsers of choice.

Firefox for normal browsing and IE for watching SKY GO.

Edge won't be my regular one until it at least can support SKY GO.

SKY GO is an app for those who don't know it that makes SKY TV available for its customers on Phones / tablets / laptops so if you like say watching Premiership football (the game with the Round ball not the "squashed Rugby ball") while travelling with a laptop or are in a hotel without SKY TV then you can do so.

    Sky Go tablet or laptop

    Cheers

Currently I use IE11 as primary and Chrome as secondary. Once extensions are available I will take another look at Edge. When I 1st tried Edge I wasn't impressed with it's functionality. However, I do believe if this is Microsoft's browser for the future, they will work toward getting it right.*Wink

I can't remember when I last used a Microsoft browser by choice, (It does get called by some processes automatically), and certain clients specify it's use so I'm not unaware of its abilities

I started on the net when Netscape was king, way before IE was even a twinkle in Bill Gate's eye, and have never found any compelling reason to use IE (and now Edge).

I've swapped between various alternative browsers as the viability changed over the years so it's not a case of using one product exclusively, just that in my experience Microsoft has never been the best for me

I believe Edge usage and satisfaction would be higher if Microsoft had automated importing favorites from IE as part of upgrading Windows 7/8.1. The icon for Edge is so similar to IE that many people don't realize it's a different browser; they're just upset that their favorites have disappeared. This is a big enough issue that sometimes people want to me to roll back to the previous OS, but they usually change their minds after I make a shortcut to IE and the favorites are restored.

IMHO I don't see Edge being the success that MS wants it to be. You only get one chance at a first impression and MS blew it by releasing Edge before it was ready.

The only functionality that Edge lacks compared to IE is ActiveX support, which no other browser supports either. ActiveX is dead, and will not be returning. Edge is superior to IE in virtually every other way. It's faster, uses less memory, is far more standards compliant, and just does a lot more.

Now, compared to other browsers, like Chrome, the extension market is far more mature, but now that extensions are available for Edge in preview, I'm sure most of the popular extensions will be ported (especially since they're basically the same as Chrome extensions).

Nor will it ever work, just like it doesn't work in Chrome or FF. Sky GO requires Silverlight, which is a dead end framework. It is only supported in ActiveX which is also a dead end framework.

Unless Sky gets off their butt and figures out a solution that works without ActiveX, that will never change. This is not Microsoft or Edge's fault, it's Sky's. If the BBC, Netflix, Hulu and others can come up with solutions that work without ActiveX, then Sky certainly can.

    No surprise here ..
Just wonder ... How come MS makes so good WDS OS but browser so badly .. "That's so politely put .."
I think they should give up on making browsers period ...!!

I prefer not to run browsers full-screen (24" 16:9 monitor). I like to have about 1.5 inches of the Desktop showing either side of the browser window. If Edge's width is set to this, then closed and opened again, it will likely open full-screen and not with the window width chosen. The answer to this seems to be to reduce the height a fraction and then the window width will be remembered.

Having twigged that, the window position isn't remembered. If it is set it to the middle of the screen and then Edge is closed, the next time it is opened, the window position will have shifted to the right a bit. Close/open Edge again and it has gone a bit further to the right. When the window reaches the end of the screen, it goes to the left and then makes its way to the right in small steps each time it is closed and opened.

DeskSoft's Window Manager overcomes the window position niggle but then I found Edge wouldn't offer to remember a password to a site I visit regularly. I normally use LastPass for passwords but this doesn't work with Edge yet.

All in all, just little things that make me prefer an alternative browser at present.

    Hi there.

That might be true of course but if an application you use a lot doesn't work on it (not Ms's fault though) then even if it's the best browser in the entire Galaxy you still aren't going to use it. !!! -- My app that I must have is SKY GO not SKY NOGO !!! -- Now it's probably SKY TV's fault that edge doesn't work - and SKY TV is notoriously slow at this type of stuff --it's only just realized that Windows 10 exists. !!!! but as a user it's important to me and a showstopper for edge in my case.

Another problem with Edge compared to FF or IE is Windowing is an entire mess - especially if you use multi-monitors and move windows around on to different monitors. Edge Window sizes aren't remembered from session to session and it's a DOG.

Rather strange - as I thought the OS was called WINDOWS - I'd at least expect Windows to be perfect !!!!!!.

Edge was released much too early -- as far as ACTIVE-X is concerned I doubt whether anybody really mourns its demise or even notices its gone.

    Cheers

you can use whatever browser you like - and as many as you like, any time you like..
you could use whatever browser you want for Sky whatsit, and Edge for everything else..(?)

PS. didn't use it much at first, meself..
BUT, it has vastly improved of late, and integrates with Win10 and Cortana as never before..

    Nowadays, it's first choice..*Cool

Apparently there is an app called Sky Go Extra that allows you to download content to your computer to view. Not sure if it also requires Silverlight, but there is no mention of it.

Sky Go Extra is instead of being restricted to only two units it allows up to five, and of course costs extra.
