Windows 10 usage continues to rise, but users say no to Edge browser

Unfortunately, like many others I'm also in this boat. As others have mentioned, I have an application that is unfortunately way behind the times technology wise. Because of my arthritis and carpal tunnel syndrome I have to use Nuance's Dragon NaturallySpeaking software. While they claim to support multiple browsers, in reality their plug-in only supports Internet Explorer. Until Microsoft Edge supports extensions I can't really use it. Even then Nuance will have to write the extension, and if it's anything like the chrome extension it won't be worth using.

I wish Microsoft would put as much effort into their real voice recognition software as they do Cortana. They are still running the same basic code that they ran in Vista. So other than the third-party choice, there is no other software that offers voice recognition. I pleaded with Microsoft during the beta of Windows 10, but never heard anything. In fact, one of the recent preview builds actually broke Dragon. I believe it is fixed now.

The point here being there are many of us who would love to use the new technologies on Windows 10, but until the applications that we use support the new environment we simply can't.

  2. I am completely happy with MS Edge. It meets most of my browsing requirements. IE 11 is the alternative when required.

I do not see where it is slow as some on this thread seem to believe. It is far more standards compliant than some of the browsers mentioned in this thread as well.

I am looking forward to "extension support" but I am a bit concerned that even when we get it, it may not support the reasons why I need to run extensions.

The current issues I have with Edge are:

    (1) The difficulty to get it to "size properly" when switching between monitors in an environment where more than one monitor is active at any one time ( Maybe it is because I do not know how to do it of course), but everything I have tried still does not do it properly.
    (2) The ads! They drive me crazy! -- Really want to be able to block ads ...
    (3) The Win 10 problem that arises when one loses access to MS Edge.

I do not understand why a claim is made that one cannot import Favourites in to Edge? It is available from IE at least. BUT....

I decided that importing favourites is actually a bad idea. One should use the opportunity to do a bit of housekeeping and re-create your favourites from scratch.

excerpt from the article posted by Brink :

Regardless of which numbers you use, it's clear that more than three out of four Windows 10 users are choosing an alternative browser, despite Microsoft's best efforts to make Edge the default in Windows 10.
Those numbers may creep up slightly later this year, as the browser continues to mature and especially when support for extensions arrives in this summer's Anniversary Update. But for now, Edge is still in use by only a minority of Windows 10 users.
    .................................................................................................... ...

    That's the bottom line.

That aside, each to his own.

  6. Windows 10 still has quirks, like the screen freezing, forcing an alt-cntrl-del to restart, but I haven't a Blue Screen error since February, thank goodness. By the way, how do you restart/shut-down a Windows-10 computer using it's new "Task Manager"? There were Shut Down and Restart options in Windows-7 Task Manager's menu at the top of its window. Right?

Edge? It's stable, as long as you're not visiting a page that's heavy with cookies and ads...like CNN or LA Times. It's very hard to close the tabs to websites like those. But I haven't seen any feature additions, or improvements. I still use Firefox if I'm doing work that involves going several layers deep into a website and I need to back up 4 pages or so. Clicking the back button 4 times, like you HAVE to do with Edge is too 1990'ish. Yep... Edge is a great basic browser but is still no better than IE6 was, many years ago.

More than likely, those "quirks" are something specific to your system, driver version, etc.. Most people (including myself) don't get see that sort of thing in the stable version (10586.xxx). I occasionally see display driver crashes in the latest insider versions, but that's to be expected when using cutting edge betas.

As for shutting down windows, you can always click File->Run Task menu item and enter "shutdown -r" to reboot.

Huh? Edge has had right-click back button history for quite some time. I think you haven't used it since it was first released and continue to repeat old information.

You are correct there in fact right from when I upgraded in August 2015 I have used Edge and always been able to right click button history. Also no where is Edge as bad as IE6, Also never ever have I had to click more than once to get me back.
As you have put he is repeating old information.

  10. Are you on the preview release?

I am on main build and have never been able to right click the back button to get history, right click on it does nothing

Many of us probably disagree with your bookmark idea. I know I do. Be that as it may, you hit the nail on the head in your bullet points. The ads are awful. In fact, that is what causes a lot of the slowness. Take Chrome and don't add in ad blocker and see how it runs on something like PCMag. You can increase Edge's performance by disabling flash. Of course for some of the crappier websites that kills video. Then again, it also kills the video auto play, which I personally am happy about.

For many of us, the extensions are a deal breaker. I'm not just talking [Removed rule 13 *Wink ] here either. With so much running on the web these days, a lot of developers have placed useful extensions into browsers, even for their desktop programs. So unfortunately for Edge, development will need to be completed and matured for the browser to catch up even to IE before it's a usable browser compared to its competitors.

  12. No I am not
Mine works on left and used for a time work on right click as well
Just tried it now and only left click works
Think an update might have caused it not to work, as I don't very often use it like 6 months ago
It worked before the upgrade to 1511 10586
So hopefully the next upgrade will bring it back

They've been in the insider program for a bit. The good news is that some companies are working on their betas in conjunction with the insider releases. Some of the more well known ones will be there. However, for some more specialized programs, like voice recognition, I'm guessing at least six months to a year and these companies tend to wait until the final release before they even start their design phase, unfortunately.
