Windows 10: Windows 10 v 1909 locked my external drive randomly

I have a strange issue with my external hard drive on my AMD PC but I do not have this problem on my Intel notebook.


PC spec

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700x

MB: ASUS ROG STRIX-E gaming x570

RAM: 48GB ddr4 3200 MHz

GPU: Asus RTX2060 O6G

Windows 10 is installed on 512GB M2 drive.


MSI Notebook spec

CPU: Intel i7 Gen8

GPU: nvidia 1050

RAM: 16GB


The problem I have on my PC started sometimes this month. I store photos file on my external 4TB seagate hard drive on usb3.2 port which I bought this year. I can open files on this drive without problem but after using PC for sometime and try to save a file on the drive, I will get error message that the disk is locked. This happens with Capture one 20.0.2, Photoshop CC latest version, and even Windows Explorer. But if I keep repeating to save or copy a file, it will eventually let me save to the drive!!!

All softwares and drivers on this PC have been updated to latest version as of today.


I would like to repeat that I do not have this problem with this drive on my notebook.


I also did clean install Windows 10 by downloding Windows 10 v1909 to usb thumb drive.


How can I fix this issue?

Windows 10 1909 Causes Secondary Hard Drive to not be Recognized

Installing the Windows 10 1909 Update causes my secondary hard drive to not be recognized.

Steps to confirm issue:

• Secondary drive not visible in Windows Explorer
• Secondary drive not visible in device manager
• Secondary drive not visible in disk manager

Steps to replicate issue:

• Installing 1909 update

Steps to resolve issue:

• Uninstall 1909 update

Since updates can only be delayed for so long, an actual fix would be appreciated.

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK
