Windows 10: Windows 10 version 1809 reportedly causes font issues on some apps like Foobar2000

Windows 10 October 2018 Update is reportedly causing font errors on Foobar2000, a popular freeware audio player. According to reports, Foobar2000 has broken fonts after installing Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809) but unlike the deletion bug, this is not a critical issue or a dealbreaker.

According to a thread on a forum, the rating stars in Foobar2000 are not working anymore after installing the Windows 10 October 2018 Update. It appears that Windows 10 version 1809 is having font substitution or front font fallback issues where the operating system fails to replace the missing characters from one font with another.



Several users have also documented the problem on Reddit and Microsoft’s software engineer revealed that this is could be a substitution or font fallback error.

“Ah, that to me is glyph substitution, or font fallback per my friend on the font side of the world. Font substitution to me is entirely replacing the chosen font with a different font, versus fallback – picking up characters/glyphs from other possible font sets,” he writes in a Reddit post.

“I’m using Segoe UI, the same font as always with my foobar2000 setup and all looked fine on 1803, things literally broke with the 1803 -> 1809 update,” a Reddit user explains.

It’s not known how many apps are having this issue but judging from the number of reports, this is not a widespread bug and the majority of apps such as Office appear to be unaffected.

WMP for version 1809...


My Windows 10 N, version 1803 had used Windows Media Player via installing it from the "Windows_MediaFeaturePack_x64_1803.msu" file.

Updating to 1809 removed the WMP and no longer available in the apps list:





There's an updated version listed at:

But clicking on the link and looking for the 1809 in the drop down list of versions does not show the media feature pack available for download for 1809; instead it shows version 1709 and 1803.

Does anyone have a direct link to WMP for Windows 10 N, version 1809?

Windows 10 Creators Update fonts issue

Still broken for the Creators Fall Update, it seems...

Symptoms we see in Word for custom installed fonts are:

• Fonts not displaying correctly in the Fonts list.
• Using a font causes the "Insufficient disk space or memory..." error.

Custom fonts do not appear in the system Fonts folder, and some standard fonts are greyed out. Attempts to reinstall custom fonts indicate they are already installed.

Wordpad: custom fonts are invisible in the fonts list. They can be selected by typing their name, but the font type does not display correctly.

Suggested workarounds have been tried with no success. We're really hoping Microsoft will prioritize this issue, as the media company I work at uses custom fonts heavily.

As mentioned in this thread already, fonts work fine with pre-1703 Windows 10 versions.
