Windows 10: Windows 10 viewer no longer opens raw image files

this started to happen after the latest big update. there is now no option to open raw picture with windows 10 default picture viewer. it no longer shows the thumbnails and when i try to open them, it wants me to choose a program that can open it besides the default, firstly recommending a program that seems to be just added by the new update. does win10 no longer supports raw pictures? the format is CR2. also, the default viewer works fine on any other format, be it JPG or PNG.

I have downloaded this, and it did not work; photo viewer is not in the list of programs in Open With or Default App. I used option 2 step 3, followed by step 5 to 9.

 

Viewing RAW files in folder view and in image viewer

I am currently using Windows 10 Home, version 1703, build 15063.608.

I am trying to open RAW image files from Canon cameras.

They are CR2 files (.CR2).

The error message simply says "we can't open this file".

The computer has never been able to open the images or been able to display thumbnails while using file explorer.

I can open the images using Photoshop but i'd like to be able to scroll through the images in file explorer and open them with a regular image viewer. It is very cumbersome to have to guess which file I need or to look at the jpeg version and then go find
the RAW file using Photoshop.

Is there a plug-in or update that will allow my windows 10 machine to view RAW files in folder view and with the image viewer. I can view the images in abobe Premier but i want to see them in file view as well.
