If I were at the opera, I would want to commit suicide. For me, pleasant music is an 80's thrash metal band, metal core band or melodic death metal *Smile

  2. I agree with quite a few of the things you said. Windows 10 seems even faster than Windows 8.x on both of the machines I have it running on.

And on my main gaming rig, I have about half a dozen DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations) to compose my own music. I'm afraid that some of it ... some of it ... possibly might fall under the category of that modern and/or thump thump music you despise. *Smile

But even if I write something that is techno or electronic in nature, I try to make it do more than just "thump" -- I try as best as I can to actually put melodies and hooks in it.

And I'll keep on writing it because I enjoy it and I think it's good. I've got fans on SoundCloud. But to each their own -- everybody has different tastes and has the right to like what they want. What a boring world it would be otherwise. *Smile

But anyway, back to the topic at hand. Even though Windows 10 seems fast, I guess it can't work miracles with hardware that just isn't up to the task. Over the weekend I upgraded my mom's friend's laptop. It must have just had a traditional 5400 RPM hard drive in it, because even with Windows 10 it still took a little patience waiting for the desktop to continue loading. Otherwise though, she seems happy.

It seems to me that if we go purely by numbers, that 8.1 was the OS to be in. I avoided it like the plague as I really hated them taking away my Start menu. Yeah sure we could use things like Classic shell and Start 8 but it always left me feeling like I was cheating somehow, and that it wasn't "what it should be".

Meanwhile it seems I was totally left out by not adopting W8.1 as it seems as far as the benchmarks are concerned to be the faster OS.

Windows 10 vs. Windows 8.1 vs. Windows 7 Performance

I'd say that 10 feels just like 8.1 to me and both better than 7. I do play a lot of computer games and always have and I'm 67 years old and retired. I'm seeing a few old fuddy-duddies here who are younger than me. *Wink I've been playing World of Warcraft since Nov. of 2005 and still enjoying it. I also use Facebook daily, and Twitter occasionally. To me a computer is for fun and entertainment, nothing too serious. I also do a good deal of online shopping and my bank is completely web based. I have a good collection of games on Steam, GOG, UPLAY and Origin. I like the first person shooters and the driving games. I hate the Grand Theft Auto series though and honestly feel it should be banned. I have been playing video games since the Pong days and was a huge Legend of Zelda addict. Every computer I have owned has been bought primarily with gaming in mind. Having said that, I don't own an Xbox and haven't used the Xbox App. It also hasn't caused me any problems either. The parts of Windows 10 that I have no use for, I don't use and have disabled. Things like Cortana, Task view, the Search box in the taskbar, Hibernation and fast boot, some of the default apps but not all, and even System Restore. (I do regular system images) I use Classic Shell to give me the Windows 7 style Start Menu but all my most used things have desktop icons.

All my games work fine in 10 and so does everything else. I did have to reinstall Chrome which somehow got messed up in the upgrade but it's working fine now. I really only use it for streaming to my Chromecast device and for the very few pages that don't work right in my default browser, IE 11. Edge is okay but not a finished product yet. I'm happy with 10 and looking forward to the games which will support DX 12. That's the main reason I upgraded. If not for that, I may have stuck with 8.1.

I do agree that the modern popular music is horrible. Give me The Beatles, Eagles, Stones, Santana, etc. Music where people actually sing, play their instruments well, and melodies are important. I also like smooth jazz, some modern Country, and some Classical. I've never been into Opera at all. I hate rap and metal. I can only take about 3 seconds of either one before I have to hit the mute button. Some Techno is okay though. I am somewhat of a fast food aficionado though. Getting dressed up to go out and eat is too much of a chore, especially since I don't even own a suit jacket or tie.

Like I said, Windows 10 boots, shuts down, and performs pretty much the same as 8.1 did. All programs and games open just as fast and perform just as well. Some of the games actually perform a little better.

  5. This fixed those pesky apps for me...

Open Windows Powershell as administrator and enter this command:

    Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers | Remove-AppxPackage

Halle-bloody-luyah! My menu is now beautiful!

So I read the article and it pretty much says that 8.1 and 10 are equal and both are slightly faster than 7. That has been my experience as well.

The ultimate question is: "Should I or Shouldn't I upgrade the... not the main build here but the second W7 Pro mini tower accessed remotely as well as can view what is going on the main build but not have the same control upgrade it to 10???

Windows 10 vs. Windows 8.1 vs. Windows 7 Performance [IMG]

Should I or Shouldn't I? is the big question since I already have the dual of 7 going with 10 in working fashion but have yet to see any grand improvements performance wise as well as it not taking anywhere near the time to put a clean install of 7 as it is for Vista, 8 having tried out the CP, skipped over 8.1, and now 10 not actually finishing loading things up when arriving at the desktop any faster then 7! So much for faster boot times.

Yet the overall familiarity of things despite a good deal of the "new looks" including "pop out from the right" type notifications no longer seeing the typical balloon type coming from the task bar or system tray area simplies navigating in 10 much easier then seen in the two previous versions(8, 8.1).

As for still seeing tiles on the Start menu those can be shrunk with a fast right click in order to select small, medium, wide, or large for many while some will only see small or medium as the two choices with the right click on resize option. If you don't like tiles those can easily be unpinned like several have been in favor of pinning things you do want to see!

From a personal viewpoint 10 still is far more eye appealing despite the latest eye candy to come along since 7 was a huge success! As for multiple platforms I knew it would take a few versions more with one look at 8 for MS to finally come out with something that would actually work. It looks like 10 is making headway.

  9. May be it's just me but i failed to see any significant performance improvement in my tests. Startup, reboot and shutdown times are more or less equal to 8.1. Yes, there are welcome changes like the removal of charms bar, easy access to shutdown button etc but honestly i don't like the new start menu - i like both Windows 7 start menu and 8.1 modern interface but not this hybrid menu much.

Oh, and that awful icons *Confused......... First they destroyed Windows logo and now the default icons too.

To me, 10 doesn't looks prettier than either 7 or 8.1 ( strictly personal opinion ).

  10. At first I was a bit frowned on the new tiles off to the right side until seeing how things work! You can easily cut the number of those right down to almost none as well as resize the total amount of desktop space it uses up as well as resize the tiles themselves that you pin there! Small. medium, wide, and large for many while some may only see the options for small and medium. When you right click on the tile itself you will then notice the resize item in the right click menu for that.

As for installation 7 is the champ! 20minutes tops for a full clean install from either flash drive or dvd! 8 took longer then Vista! Vista was about 40minutes give or take a few while 8 took a full hour when trying out the Customer Preview for that. 10's TP went on just a little faster and the latest clean install of the RTM we all have now was under an hour at about 53 minutes! Less Metrolizations and less time with Getting things ready while you still wait a bit.

Yup, same here, it boots up, shuts down and plays all my games and allows all my work programs to function without problems. In fact oddly enough it even allows my computer to properly sleep now where as in Win 7 it would go to sleep and immediately wake back up, so I guess that's a bit of a bonus.

Although I can't honestly say that any of my games actually perform any better. They all seem to be roughly the same FPS they were when running under W7. But at least they don't perform any worse, so that's another bonus.

  12. Well here's another interesting tid bit besides seeing the Steam and other games run about the same as always. The Home edition doesn't want to be cooperative when it comes to VM Player and perhaps any VMs as somewhat to be expected since most would expect to the Pro or Enterprise offer Virtualization support more so then the Home edition. The same applied to the previous versions as well as with 7. The Pro is going right onto the new VM while the Home simply hangs right after the first restart and sits there like a block of ice doing nothing. As far as Virtualization that's the one downside seen so far.

    Without philosophizing...

    Windows 10 = freezing / useless
Windows 8/8.1 = full of bugs
    Windows 7 = stable

i see no difference from 7 to 10 just looks a bit different but performance and getting to navigate it seems the same,8 was just a disaster.

So far for me (fingers crossed, knock on wood) W10 has been just as stable as 7 was for me. 7 never BSOD on me (until the new RAM that I got turned out to be bad) and all the programs that I ran on it were rock stable, and so far they're all doing exactly the same on 10 and I've not had any freezes or crashes thus far. So far for me after an initial hiccup with permissions, I'd have to say that if I didn't know better somebody could tell me that this is Windows 7 with a Stardock Windowblinds theme applied to it and I'd tend to believe them without looking further into it.
