  1. Windows 10 vs. Windows 8.1 vs. Windows 7 Performance

Maybe I will try that on the remote system here while keeping that isolated. With almost every new version when first out someone will have some 3rd party tweaker often on a page full of other download links for things you don't want! On the second page the download link will say "download Winaero" while you will see several large buttons for other things.

The part of not being able to adjust things is likely from not seeing 10 activated as of yet for some. You can't change the default themes leaving you with a dark background lacking wallpapers unless having some stored you can toss into the Windows or folder on the drive to pick and choose from.

    Hi there

    Agree with Lee's post

If you were say on a Harley Davidson Bikers Forum would you post saying how dreadful the Bikes are (They aren't at all IMO).

Yes - some things on W10 could be better and some stuff added - but that's the same with almost any product on the market - you'll almost never find a 100% satisfactory product . Surely it's better to make CONSTRUCTIVE criticism amd suggestions than just saying "I hate this xxxxx"

What sort of response do you (@ Trust_no1) want from that type of remark --- seems to me like some totally socially inadequate sub teen just posting for the sake of it.

@pparks1 I LIKE the opera !!! but each to their own. I loathe though boring repetitive current Night club music - it's just THUMP THUMP THUMP etc usually played for people who've imbibed or consumed a variety of substances - not all necessarily legal either.

@ the rest -- whatever else people say about W10 -- I find the performance far better than W7 and if you don't like Apps or the tiled stuff just delete the tiles from the start menu. W7 starting up just seems as slow as molasses compared with W10 even when both are using SSD's.

Another great thing you can have on W10 (also W8/W8.1) that you can't do on W7 is use STORAGE SPACES -- great idea.

If legacy games etc don't work or work slowly then it's usually up to the hardware / software manufacturers to update their kit. Ms can't be expected to have solutions for every possible combination of hardware / software on the planet - especially if a load of these applications were written NOT USING windows API's. A lot were written with direct memory accesses etc to speed up performance on the old OS's. W10 is more secure making that type of "Clever" programming not so good any more - even if it still works.

Ms IMO has done a pretty reasonable job on essentially the first iteration of W10 -- especially as it has finally decided that there is still a huge market for "conventional computers" - not everybody is using mobile phones all the time and they certainly don't need a desktop computer run a Mobile phone OS. Love to see a trading (stock) system with 6 large screens operating Level 2 live data streams running on a Mobile phone !!!!

    Cheers

Not surprising that with such a huge user base experiences will be different.

Personally I ran Vista for years without any problems worth mentioning. I have 3 x Win7 systems which are nothing but trouble.

Win8 runs just fine and so far Win10 is doing the same.

So, based on my experience Win7 was the worst MS offering and Win 8 is the best. And Win10 is so underwhelming that I can't be bothered with it, especially as MS seem to think, IMO, that desktop users are an after thought.

I can just see MS going the way of Google/Android which doesn't bode well for serious users i.e lack of stability of product.

  4. Windows 10 vs. Windows 8.1 vs. Windows 7 Performance

One Drive is available for 7 as well as 8, 8.1, and now 10 only 10 sees it included. Personally here I simply prefer local storage over Clod I mean Cloud storage where no one else can gain access to anything important. Fortunately the only thing seen by OneDrive automatically snatching up things was suddenly finding the icon in a temp folder I keep snippings and screen captures in with it likely assuming that was all photos?

That was seen on the initial upgrade while so far hasn't happened on the subsequent upgrade to repair tended to a day or so later and the full clean install just seen to. It was likely a fluke of some sort while the sight of it was a concern at first about things being done automatically while with every previous version admin user permissions were required. W7 would have automatically prompted for those permissions so you can't say there isn't any downside just because 10 is new.

You have to weigh both the Pros and the Cons with each new version as it comes along. So I don't have any real issues with 10 as I am slowly going over each aspect having known it would be better then the previous two versions!

When first coming up from XP through Vista to 7 the loss of the option Vista had for setting Classic folder views was an erk with 7 at first sight! Yet I've now run 7 since beta! I think the expression that fits things best for 10 would be "If it feels good go with the flow!" and once I got past the initial possible bugs from the upgrade process 10 has been running quite well thank you! *Biggrin

Yes, it seems like an incomplete OS, never mind, we have another year to fix them all, I will keep my 8.1 until everything is fixed to my satisfaction, Win 8.1 functions perfectly for me and not going to immediately jump to Win10*Biggrin

  7. I had another solution and now have two systems with both 10 and 7 configured in dual boots. The main case sees the two on separate drives while the second saw the OS split in two quite evenly to see a clean install of 10 go to the second primary. The second case is portable and connect to WiFi so that others can see what 10 is and decide for themselves. Plus this will allow some other testing of things having taken notice of the For developers section since I know a program developer by chance. *Smile

    Agreed.
I think they must have labelled the charts incorrectly.
On my PC, W7 boots in ~60 seconds these days; it wakes in ~6 seconds.

I think Windows 10 is faster but only because they've made it bare bones theme and taken out most of the features that were in prev versions.

Windows 10 vs. Windows 8.1 vs. Windows 7 Performance

Some of my programs are slower in Windows 10, but most run about the same speed as they did in Windows 7. But, Windows 10 still has a lot of bugs to iron out, and lots more updates for all of us. *Smile

  15. I've been waitng a long time for the prices on the 1tb models to come down but still those way up there! *Sad

Overall 7 will load upto the desktop faster but you still have to wait for more then the gui to finish loading as seen with any version. The gap between the first logo screen and the desktop in 10 seems a bit longer while the processes are still loading in the background however so the hard drive led isn't quite so busy when you arrive at the desktop. A switcheroo of a sort! You can still working sooner since you wait longer.

Well naturally there are going to be some bugs to work out with any new version when first out. With XP it took how long for the much, much needed SP3? Vista saw the need right off for SP1 due to not reading system memory accurately and eventually saw SP2 arrive later as well while 7 was a leap forward for MS there only seeing SP1 with not so many fixes needed.

W8 introduced the new dual platform concept in it's infancy still needing quite a bit of work as well as seeing a few things brought back! W8.1 was the continuation and now 10 is starting to get where MS should be! When some start knocking 7 they should remember that it was hoped that what came next would be taking steps forward while 8? was under the hood more then the gui changes. W8.1 moved forward and now 10 looks like it here to stay! It's now starting to see MS continuing the momentum first seen and started with 7!
