Windows 10: Windows 10 vs. Windows 8.1 vs. Windows 7 Performance

Well I kinda agree with you sir, I don't think it is quite stable yet. But remember we all are "beta testers) for this new os, weather you want to be or not. I am used to this. kinda fun. I always make complete backups tho. I could re-install my windows 7 ultimate at anytime I want with no problems. This last update we got yesterday does seem to fix some of the bugs. This update did not give me any problems on re-booting last the last one before this one did. But I have had to reboot at least once a day to get windows 10 stable again. But....it does run better after a reboot.... *Wink

 

As for Microsoft Money Plus, I haven't tried in the last week or so, but I couldn't get it to work in compatibility mode or otherwise. Others have discussed registry hacks to get it going along with a patch that MS does not support. But I haven't tried that for concern over other problems it might cause in Win10. Right now, I've continued using it with Win7 on a secondary computer. (IMO, it was/is the best checkbook program there ever was).

About the privacy settings, I've turned most of mine to the off position. But with Win10, there are other settings (such as telepathy) that cannot be turned off in this manner. It does appear Microsoft is being a bit too invasive with privacy in Win10, but of course I guess we all have to get over that if we choose to use Win10. MS wants data from their users and I don't think they will budge on this issue.

What you said about the boot times makes sense, particularly since the OS has to see two different types of platforms when it loads. And fortunately, in my case, it doesn't take that much longer to boot Win10 versus Win7. The best upgrade I ever did was last year when I installed a new SSD in my older PC. It made it feel like a low end i5. So even now with Win10, the boot time is not bad--just a little longer than Win7.

 

While I had a few bumps and burses, this was the easiest up-grade for me. I went from the horror of Vista to 7. It was a piece of work that took sometime to get 7 running properly. Then smooth sailing. The migration to 10 was much easier and so far experiencing much better performance over 7. Doesn't mean I didn't have challenges, you always will when changing.
Lose some and gain some functionality!

 

I guess many of us can relate to the horrors of Vista. I got my PC new about a month before the Vista launch in 2007. And what a mess that was (at the time-my new PC) trying to install Vista b/c it would not recognize my factory default raid setting in the BIOS. The installation of Win10 was very smooth and found every driver that it needed (on this now older PC). So it was nice to complete the clean install and see a clean Device Manager in Win10. But as you say with any OS, lose some and gain some functionality. I just wished I could get my old program (MS Money Sunset) working in Win10 without hacking the registry.

 

Upom installing 10 to VMs I saw Money Talks pinned to the Start. I suspect that could be a new name for the same thing and why you haven't been able to get the Money Plus working. You may want to look into that to see if the two are the same.

One the settings as the setup continues along after you either do or don't log in or create a new MS account to log on with you have the fast and easy Express settings and looking down you see the custom link where I simply switch off everything on the first screen but leave everything on the second like Smart screen for IE also used by Edge plus the other setting on. The first screen involves providing data to 3rd parties as well as your location whether on desktop or mobile allowing them to market using your information?!

The biggest leap I have seen with any version of Windows so far having 16gb of ram on this build was actually way back with XP when going to move up from a pair of 512mb dimms to 2gb of memory! Zammmmm!!! That old version suddenly came to life. With the 64bit however once you get past the 4-6gb mark you really can't expect much as far as seeing that type of performance boost but won't be bogged down when having some large more demanding apps running.

Just running WMP for example on the second remote case when accessed from the main a flag will appear for the second being at 75% due to the 4gb of memory there. I'm still going to need to swap out the 2gb dimms for 4gb dimms of the same brand and type to get the most out of that now. Besides weighing the performance 10 is also bringing some rather new and interesting features I can put to real use like Virtual desktops on the main case since I have plenty of ram to spare there! *Biggrin

 

Concerning myself with these issues caused me headaches. There is No Expectation Of Privacy on The Net anyway.

 

Dang, guess I'll have to buy a new computer with Win10 installed to see if it gets broken. I have Win10 Home on a 5-year-old Dell Inspiron 580 Desktop that had Win7 and a couple of Dell Inspiron 15R Notebooks that came with Win8.1, not seeing the issues others are so far. Or maybe I'll see issues when I decide to Upgrade over my Win7 Ultimate or Win8.1 Custom computers.

 

Vista was far from a horror story that was XP with all the headaches of the BSOD OD seen there. MS forgot to get any fixes out following SP2 while "Long Horn" was delayed several times trying to bring in new security as well as the Aero theme package. The problem still being seen with 10 was they understated what the actual recommended minimum system requirements should have been being 2gb of memory not 512mb to tickle OEM fancies just as 7, 8, 8.1 and now 10 are seeing 1gb instead of 2g for performance with the 32bit and 4gb with the 64bit since memory prices have come way down as the capacity of boards was going up.

Vista also brought in a much improved crash control system while it saw Fat support typical of not only usb flash drives but just about every hand held device's memory being seen on the market. W7 brought that back in fortunately. As far as the initial upgrade here it was buggy! which too often is the case with upgrades not seeing everything go on like you would expect to see with a fresh clean install of in fact just about any OS!

The upgrade on the second however won't be needing any upgrade to repair install while I try to revert that back to 7 since the clean install of 10 on a second primary went smooth as silk and is now activated.. I would say other then getting accustomed to the latest "New Version" to be seen would be worth buying if it wasn't a free download despite likely going to be needing the SP1 to get things squared away. Vista also needed it's SP1 while 7 didn't have the urgency.

 

This is EXACTLY the way i feel lol, could care less about smartphone's , tablet's and especially games . At least you were able to delete the majority of useless tiles , i am still trying to figure out how to do that.

 

Everybody will have a different experience regarding performance based on what they are computing on and how they have everything setup.

Certain people obsess about this stuff and are never satisfied until they get their rig to perform as efficiently as possible, these types will wipe the drive and start over if they they think it will make even a slight improvement .

To me Win 10 performs on par with Win 7 , i don't see a noticeable difference either way at this point. I am not even close to fine tuning it to my liking though so we will see,

I keep getting corrupted files when performing sfc/scannow and chkdsk/f isn't fixing it so that maybe a big reason for my disappointment.

 

That's amazing! My system generates errors, errors and more errors with startup since 7/29 but no crashes or lockups but sfc/scannow has yet to show any corrupted files since day one. Go Figure

 

Generally I may nuke a primary when it's been on a long time like a good year or more when a totally fresh install is needed or I'm working on a VM project and something doesn't go right. Been trying to see a portable vm in order to show someone what I have been working with lately since one laptop is unable to connect online. I wanted that person to see what 10 looks like.

As for performance nothing will top over a nice clean install when first working with a brand new system registry regardless of which version of Windows you are working with since you can tweak things best when new. You won't have a lot of overhead with numerous startups and background processes to contend with. But on each machine you deal with the hardware configuration as well as the software portion.

"buggy buggy buggy where the first upgrade was just that. I didn't get only a few errors when trying to get things on with that like the antivirus and a few other programs. Since this is the first version to be delivered by updates or a media creation tool you have to expect it will need time to be worked out fully as well as being the brand new Windows.
