I have come to realise that the biggest gaping hole in windows privacy and security is in the blatant promiscuity of the WIFI connections.

any open network that it detects WILL be connected to when it tries to reach out to the internet.

I have gone through the pain of setting every known open network in my work areas to never auto connect. I have even tried stipulating that these connections are metered connections, in the hope that this would somehow dissuade a connection.

Alas, windows will still connect auto-magically to these networks. More alarmingly, it will opt to connect to an open network which is specifically marked as metered and UNticked for automatic connection - over my trusted 4G device which is ticked for automatic connection. My assumption is that for different APNs on the same network, it somehow circumvents this setting.

The risk with this (which I have personally tried and proven) is that anyone can use a small IOT device - like a PI - to create an open network and start wreaking all kinds of havoc with very little effort. It is thus no longer just a networking issue - it is a security and privacy issue.

I have tried for many months to find an adequate solution - even on this forum. There are none that actually work. I would think there is some way to script or configure the routing tables or a virtual adapter to somehow only use trusted connections? I don't care to try working it out for my self and definitely don't have the time.

Please provide an actual solution to disallow automatic connections to ALL open networks uniformly, without having to try doing so manually for each network specifically - which doesn't actually work and is impossible to maintain regardless.

I personally NEVER want to connect to an open network. Ever. ...this should be the default on all systems anyway.

    :)

    Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK
