Windows 10: Windows 10 - windows update AND upgrade fail from 1709 to 2004 with 0xC1900101 - 0x40017

Since 1709, this machine has not been able to update to any feature updates via Windows Update, although it can update to various KBs and drivers and security stuff.

WUReset2.0.BAT was run before most of those updates, to no avail.

Everything listed in remedy recommendations across this & other boards, except for "try after a Clean Boot", have been tried and still failed:

- BIOS updated,
- drivers updated,
- 73G free space,
- all other Windows updates have been installed,
- all previous feature update folders have been cleaned up,
- only Defender for AV,
- all running apps stopped,
- all peripherals disconnected,
- etc.

I kept doing these with every feature update, hoping one of them would have the magic sauce to have it fixed, but no.

Ultimately, today, I used the 10.0.19041.450 Media Creation Tool latest as of today to create an ISO, and then extracted those files onto a secondary internal HD connected to the machine, and ran Setup.EXE from there, hoping to upgrade the existing 1709. Nope. Still the exact same error!

The error is the usual 0xC1900101 - 0x40017.

Please help! This has been a year long pain... Me trying to parse the LOG files only resulted in me realizing how they don't mean anything to me...

Error 0xc1900101 0x40017 when updating to 2004

Hi, I am trying to update my windows 10 pro from 1909 to 2004. I tried already 3 times, the first twos with windows update and the latest with the iso. However they end with the same result with the error 0xc1900101 - 0x40017 "the installation failed in
the second_boot phase with an error during boot operation".

I found this page https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/deployment/upgrade/resolution-procedures but I don't have Citrix VDA
installed (I don't know even what is its purpose) so I can't follow the solution steps.

Has anyone got any suggestion? Aside for a clean install. Thank you

Update to Windows 10 2004 fails, error 0xC1900101-0x40017

Hello,

on my desktop computer (Intel Z170 chipset, integrated graphics), the update to Windows 10 2004 keeps failing, probably in the second boot phase. The update was offered in Windows Update (no manual installation). I removed all unnecessary hardware and updated
drivers, but I don't succeed. It seems that during boot, the system crashes. SetupDiag.exe gives the error 0xC1900101-0x40017.

Does anybody have hints on what I can do to find out what goes wrong?
