In this case, I would not recommend upgrading a damaged Windows, it could end up badly.
Reset or clean setup would do it good, you have already spent more time trying to fix it anyway.

Sorry to hear nothing seems to be working out for you Paddy, if you want to try it, do what I suggested in post #8.

Then insert the USB and set your computer to boot from USB. If you can set it for a one time boot option do that, otherwise if you have to set USB as first boot device in BIOS you'll want to remove the USB drive at the first reboot. At that point you want it to reboot from the HDD and continue the installation.

Doing it this way still allows for doing an upgrade, keeping everything you have now. At least this should get to the point of the install starting. Post #8 quoted below:

But I have made numerous command prompt health checks and what else not, there are no actual errors on my Windows, its not damaged as such aside of these bugs I'm trying to fix with an update. Reset and clean setup wouldn't be an option in my case, I have too many programs and files in the system that need to remain unchanged.

Thanks, I would only go for that option if it has no impact whatsoever in terms of existing programs and files.
If there is any fix on how to force start setup.exe, that would be I'd most gladly go for at this moment....
Would trying to execute setup.exe from command prompt make any difference than trying to do it via Windows Explorer ?
Or if theres any software or bat script that could force start setup.exe ?

I have tried doing it from Administrator: Command Prompt
    No luck... setup.exe does nothing.

I'm on a 10.586 Build right now, I've just started the "Windows 10 Update Assistant".
Will post results, (if they're favorable!) *Wink

When you boot from install media (cd or USB) one of the screens as the install starts gathering information gives you the option to keep your existing files and settings, or keep nothing.

There may be no other choice Paddy, if double clicking on setup.exe doesn't start it I'm not sure what alternatives you may have to get it to execute.

I've put a small pic of the screen you get for choices from this tutorial for clean install, I know you're not doing a clean install but that's where I was able to find a pic of what you'll see. You would choose Upgrade Install, here's the source of the pic https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/1...n-install.html

@Paddy: I am really trying to understand your primary objective here?

You say you are on the earliest version of Windows 10 when you are actually on the latest (non-Anniversary) version.

You say you can't upgrade to the latest version (which is Anniversary) when the normal upgrade period has expired.

So, are you trying to repair your existing version (10586.494) dated July 12th, 2016 or are you really trying to upgrade to the latest Anniversary edition (14393.10) "after" the typical upgrade period has expired?

The reason for my concern is I see references to a clean install using an ISO without respect to the specific version being used. So, what would happen if Paddy tried to use the latest 1607 ISO to do a clean install under the current conditions? Personally, I think he would end up in a pickle...

Finally some good news and progress !! : )
I have once more downloaded & tried with the latest manual update file from Microsoft:
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...update-history
Updates for Windows 10 Version 1607

This time the process actually started and moved to the next step:

I have tried this with the very same file previously, numerous times, but the process always got stuck on 'Checking device compatibility'... now it passed that in a few seconds and moved to update process itself. The only thing I can think of, maybe the file I had previously downloaded was corrupt or another Windows bug kept it stuck at this step. So if anyone has the same problem - delete the update file You first tried with, download it once more and try updating again. This has worked for me, hopefuly the update will run smoothly and I will post back with more good news.

The update process went all right, finished completely, I clicked on restart... trouble is after restarting Windows just came back to its normal login screen, I logged in, but there was no notification that update is finished or anything... I looked in the settings but the version is still the same, nothing changed, also other problems still remain - refreshing is still not automatic.

I don't know what has happened, maybe I shouldn't have logged in after restart ?
