Windows 10’s Control Panel Will Go Away, Could Survive in RTM

Testers of Windows 10 are familiar with settings in Windows 10 but there will be millions of people who won't be when Microsoft hands out the free updates. It is going to be a shock to many people. It is going to cause more confusion just like the 8 start menu did. How are applications that put an entry in the Control Panel going to be treated? I know there are many like Nvidia, Quicktime and Flash that put entries into it.

I hated Windows 8 when I first got it. I couldn't even figure out how to shut the blasted computer down!

By the time Windows 8.1 came around, I was adjusting, although not easily. By the time I started testing Windows 10, I had completely figured things out on 8.1. I helped a friend pick out a new computer and told her how nasty Windows 8 was, and that I'd help her get up to speed. Imagine my surprise when she took to it like a duck to water . . . She knows very little about the underlying operating system, but once she figured out how to get to her applications, she was a happy camper. I suspect that this will be exactly how others will react too.

Yes, I believe that it will cause confusion. But I think what may cause more confusion is the fact that many users have never installed Windows--they just bought a computer and it has Windows installed. Now they can get a the newest OS free but they will have to install it. I believe that this will cause some problems.

From what I've read, Frank, and from Windows 10 builds automatically updating my PC, there won't be an installation issue; the user just has to give permission.

Wholeheartedly agree with the sentiment that the large majority of users find adaptation easier than us. We're the ones that need to find the settings - most users don't even know, or care, that settings even exist! It is a pity, but they are scared the computer will implode if they play with it. Sometimes they are right!!

That sounds like a good idea. I'm assuming that if it works that way it certainly won't be a clean install or there would be big problems. For myself, I'll back up my important files and do a clean install. I should have the option to do that shouldn't I?

Yep. Microsoft has said that once we've upgraded, we can clean install Windows 10 as many times as we like. 'Course, it has to be on the same computer.

OEM maybe but Retail version should stay as it always was.

It should, Count, but so far I haven't seen any evidence that we'll have a Retail version of Windows 10. *Sad

Yep. All hail to the God Mode now.

There's good changes and bad changes.

Control Panel was doing a good job at what it was doing. Looking at Windows 7's CP, it's touch convenient. I don't see why it would be hard to go through it on a tablet.

You know, leave us the choice between both. It won't kill anybody.

  11. Not sure how different the CP is in 7 compared to 8, but in 8 the CP s a horrible experience on a tablet

The choice was almost there in 8 (settings missing things though), people complained about having two ways to do things, so insiders where asked if they wanted the Settings app or CP

Windows 10’s Control Panel Will Go Away, Could Survive in RTM

    Hi there

People - even totally non technical ones don't have much trouble with updating mobile phone apps - (except when they don't work of course) or even updating an OS like Android to a later version. Ms is trying to make Windows updates as seamless as possible so the amount of technical knowledge required to perform an update will be minimal.

The main problem though with all these simplified "one-click" type of installs is that IF something DOES go wrong then it's usually almost impossible to fix it.

    Cheers

Might as well get used to the fact that it's all being written over to WinRt from Win32 API. WinRT is a far better, efficient API that is able to run on both x86 and ARM architectures. It's also sandboxed environment to allow for greater security and stability.

  15. Microsoft can't completely retire Control Panel for this reason if no other. Maybe they can label it 'Legacy Control Panel' and discourage developers from making new applets for it. BUT is it nice and easy to create the same thing in PC Settings?

I am, however, disappointed if PC Settings still doesn't include everything in Control Panel.
