Windows 10’s search will stop hogging disk or CPU resources

Windows 10 20H1 update, which will be released later this year, includes fixes for excessive disk and CPU usage caused by Windows Search Indexer. Today, Microsoft confirmed that the company is working on another Windows 10 update that will include more changes for Windows Search.

In Windows 10 Build 19592, which is likely to be part of 20H2 update, Microsoft says it has updated Windows Search indexer with improved logic to find better times to perform indexing of your files.

Windows Search indexer provides fast files searches by building an index, which is used by File Explorer, taskbar search bar, Start menu, and File Explorer. On Windows 10, Microsoft indexes the “Start Menu” and your “Users” folders including Documents, Downloads, Desktop, Videos and Pictures, so the search can find and return your results quickly.

The indexer frequently scans your computer for new files and apps. During the scan process, your CPU and disk usage could increase and it may also lead to 100% usage on low-end hardware.

With Windows 10 20H2 update, Microsoft is updating Windows Search to pause indexing process when you are actively using your machine. The company says it has improved the algorithm to automatically find better times to index your files.

Windows Search will also limit the number of times it indexes your files for content that doesn’t have an impact on search results.

While these improvements will arrive in the second of this year, Microsoft also introduced a new algorithm for Windows Search in Windows 10 version 2004 update. The new algorithm detects excessive usage and other performances issues, and throttle search indexing activity to prevent system slowdowns.

Microsoft says it will continue to work on performance improvements while developing new features for search.

According to Microsoft’s typical release schedule, Windows 10 version 2004 is expected to begin shipping in April/May, while Windows 10 20H2 will ship to consumers in October/November.

Photos app hogging resources in background

I was having this issue after moving my pictures library to an external hard drive. I resolved it by opening Photos app, select the menu ". . . " in the upper right corner, click on settings, scroll down to the "Viewing and editing" section, turn off the
switch for "People - Allow naming and grouping of people blah blah blah...". As soon as I set that to off my CPU dropped to normal and I was able to stop Photos running in the background. Photos still works and it only searches when the program is open.

Many picture management apps now have facial recognition for your digital photos, but I've never seen one that takes as long, uses as much resources, or runs in the background without permission to the point of slowing down your work and overheating your
CPU the way Microsoft Photos does. If you need a program that creates albums using facial recognition look for one from someone else.

Also, all these "canned answers" and "looking for reasons other than the app causing all the problems" that you encounter on answers.microsoft.com is hurting the brand. Please, if you're a moderator or a Microsoft specialist, really read the issue and try
to find common sense, easily applied solutions to what people are seeking help with. This entire thing started with a guy asking how to stop Photos from hogging all his resources in the background and, unless I missed it in all the long pages of answers, nobody
suggested he just turn off the switch that stops it from searching all his pictures for faces. I'm just a regular guy, no official Microsoft or Windows training, and I happened on it after about 10 minutes of digging. You've had people troubleshooting their
entire system, booting into Safe Mode, and checking OneDrive forums. I appreciate that you're trying to help, but sometimes we just need the simple answer: "Go here and turn that OFF"

    WIn 10 Tiworker.exe CPU hogging

    Hi,

I have the same issue in Windows 10. A while later it stopped automatically. I try to find out why this happened.

It seems this caused by the automatic system file checker. If you run this command

    >sfc /scannow

you will see the same situation, Tiworker.exe will hog your CPU for a while until it finishes.
