Windows 11 Emoji Picker Search Box Disappears in Some Builds, Restarting Explorer Restores It

A bug in Windows 11 is causing the search box in the built-in emoji picker to disappear, which means users can't search for emojis by name. Several users have reported the issue, and Windows Central has confirmed it in the Windows 11 Insider Beta channel.

Microsoft has not yet acknowledged the bug or provided an official fix. Restarting the PC often resolves the problem, but there is a faster workaround that takes about 30 seconds.

How to Restore the Missing Emoji Picker Search Box in Windows 11

The issue seems to be related to UI rendering in Windows Explorer. Restarting the Explorer process usually refreshes the affected interface elements and restores the search box functionality.

To do this, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. Locate Windows Explorer in the list of processes. Right-click on it and choose Restart.

The taskbar will disappear briefly and then reload as Windows Explorer restarts. Once it reappears, open the emoji picker with Win + . (period) should display the search box correctly.

How Widespread the Windows 11 Emoji Picker Bug Appears to Be

The bug has been reported by Windows Central writers testing Insider Beta channel builds. It is still unclear whether the issue is limited to Insider builds or if it also appears in stable Windows 11 releases. The frequency of the bug varies from one machine to another, with some users experiencing it repeatedly and others not seeing it at all.

Microsoft has not provided a fix or a timeline for when a solution might be available. Until a permanent fix is released, restarting Windows Explorer remains the quickest workaround.

  2. Emoji Picker Search Not Working

I can bring up the emoji picker with <Win+period> but when I try to search for an emoji by typing in the box, the box does not show the characters I type. Instead, it shows the keys in the order they are on the keyboard like this:

    What I type: smile

    What shows: qwert

Sometimes, it will be offset by a certain number of characters. I.e. sometimes it will start with "`1234", other times "ghjkl", etc. It seems to run on a cycle so the pattern repeats and it seems the pattern can start at any position depending on external factors.

If I start typing in the emoji search box and lets say the box shows "qwer" if I close the box and type something in another program, let's say "hello" then I open the emoji search again and start typing, the first character to show in the search will be "p". The five letters in "hello" (typed in another progarm) counted toward the cycle of characters in the emoji picker search so that it skips over "tyuio" and goes straight to "p".

Restarting the computer does not help. This has been happening for a month or more. I don't really use the search feature of the emoji picker that often as the emojis I want are generally right there when I open the picker and I can select with the arrow keys.

  3. Emoji picker doesn't use the correct language

Hello! Thank you for reaching out. I understand that you are experiencing an issue with the emoji picker in Windows 11. I'll do my best to assist you with this.

Regarding your concern, the language used in the emoji picker is based on the language settings of your keyboard. If your keyboard is set to AZERTY with French as the language, then the emoji picker will display the French names of the emojis.

To change the language used in the emoji picker, you can try changing the language settings of your keyboard. Here's how:

    1. Go to Settings > Time & Language > Language.

    2. Under Preferred languages, click on the language you want to use for the emoji picker.

    3. Click on Options.

    4. Under Keyboards, click on Add a keyboard.

    5. Select the keyboard layout you want to use (in your case, AZERTY).

    6. Remove any other keyboard layouts that you don't need.

    7. Restart your computer.

After following these steps, the emoji picker should display the English names of the emojis. I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

  4. Windows 11 Emoji Picker Search Box Disappears in Some Builds, Restarting Explorer Restores It

    Emoji Picker Search Not Working

Hello! My name is Cristiano. I'm an Independent Advisor. I'm glad to help you.

To resolve this, you may want to try a few steps in order to troubleshoot the issue.

First, you can try resetting the emoji picker settings. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. Open the Settings app by pressing Windows key + I.

    2. Click on "Time & Language".

    3. Click on "Language" from the left sidebar.

    4. Scroll down to the "Preferred languages" section and click on "Options" next to your language.

    5. Scroll down to the "Keyboard" section and click on "Input method".

    6. Click on "Options" next to the "Microsoft Emoji" input method.

    7. Click on "Reset" under the "Reset to default" section.

If this doesn't resolve the issue, you can run the System File Checker (SFC) and Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) tools to check for and repair any corrupt system files. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. Open the Command Prompt as an administrator by searching for "Command Prompt" in the Start menu, right-clicking it, and selecting "Run as administrator".

    2. Type "sfc /scannow" and press Enter. This will scan your system files for any errors and repair them if possible.

    3. Once the SFC scan is complete, type "DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth" and press Enter. This will check for and repair any issues with the Windows image files.
