Windows 11 has swapped my C and D hard drives! It's now booting off my backup clone,...

My Windows 11 machine has two internal drives. I had it setup and it's been running fine for a year with a 1TB HDD as disk 0 with the volume name "clone-backup and an 1 TB SSD as disk 1 with volume name "boot-drive". The SSD drive 1 was the C: drive and the HDD drive 0 was the D: drive. Then, it looks like a few days ago something happened. The SSD which had been the boot drive and was assigned C: became D:. The HDD disc 0 which had been D: was now the boot drive and changed from D: to C: The SSD disc 1 which had been the boot drive and was C: was now D: and no longer the boot drive.I d

  2. Swapping drive letters, including boot volume

I have a new computer. I want to clone the system to a new SSD. Can I change the drive letter of the SSD to C: after cloning?

    I have a new ASUS M52BC with:

    • 1 TB hard drive with a Windows (CWindows 11 has swapped my C and D hard drives! It's now booting off my backup clone,... :) and empty data (DWindows 11 has swapped my C and D hard drives! It's now booting off my backup clone,... :) partition
    • Windows 8.1 (I will upgrade to Windows 10 very soon) on the hard drive
    • Samsung SSD 850 EVO (physically installed but nothing more done to it)
What I want to get to is:

    • 1 TB hard drive with the data (DWindows 11 has swapped my C and D hard drives! It's now booting off my backup clone,... :) partition and (for the old Windows partition) the drive letter of the C: changed to something else
    • Windows 10 on the SSD as the C:
I don't intend to boot to Windows on the hard drive after I get Windows working on the SSD unless I need to remove the SSD for return to ASUS for repair. (My new computer had a bad motherboard when I received it but I hope I do not need to return it again.)

I want to clone Windows to the SSD using the Samsung Data Migration tool. During the clone, the SSD will of course not have the drive letter "C". To boot from and use the SSD after the cloning, it must have the drive letter "C", correct? I assume the Data
Migration tool cannot change the drive letter used by the software it clones.

After the clone, how do I swap the drive letters? I assume I cannot change the drive letter of the hard drive Windows partition when it was used to boot from because it would be the boot drive, correct?

I know that some people will suggest that I do a fresh install. I want to avoid doing that if possible.

    I see
Migrate system partition to a new disk
. I think that describes doing what I am trying to do, but unfortunately he does not know how he did it.

Swap C & D Drive back to SSD & HHD

I had some issues with updating Windows: Redirecting

I followed the steps but I noticed that Windows 11 was working really slowly. I looked on Task Manger and it looks like my drives have swapped? Originally my C drive was the SSD and D drive was HDD but now they have swapped so C Drive is HDD and D is SSD.

How can you swap your drives?

    Swapping C and D drives

Hi, I am Dave, I will help you with this.

There is no method in Windows to do this, but you could backup all the files from the D drive, then wipe the D drive and use a 3rd party utility like the free trial version of Macrium Reflect to clone the C drive onto the D drive, then in BIOS, change the boor order so the D drive is the primary boot device, and finally wipe the old C drive so you can use it as a data drive, it is a bog job and it may be best if you have an IT team in your company, get them to do this for you, especially because you use DropBox to sync files.
