  2. Windows 11 Performance and Install Integrity Checklist 2023

Go over WIndows 11 System with this checklist to find and fix problems.

If any steps cannot be performed normally then try them in 1) Safe Mode with Networking (so you have internet) or 2) Safe Mode, accessed by one of the illustrated steps in this guide: How to Boot Windows 11 in Safe Mode You will need to use your password to get into Safe Mode as a PIN is not accepted.

If this is not enough you can try the repairs from the WinRE Repair Mode or using bootable media as shown here: https://www.elevenforum.com/t/boot-to-advanced-startup-winre-in-windows-11.425/ using the Command Prompt, System Restore, Uninstall Updates button and other tools that will allow most of these repairs to be run from the WinRe repair mode or bootable media. For guided help start a new thread in Windows section or ask in Comments section below.

Now the steps to try at your own speed:

    1) See if you can System Restore to a point before the problem started: How To Use Windows 11 System Restore Point (4 Ways)

System Restore is your first line of defense and can take you back to a point before a problem began like a time machine. If it doesn't help then you can undo it. Read about it first in the tutorial above and then try restoring to just before this started. If System Restore is not enabled on C drive do that now so it's available in the future.

If the problem repeats or System Restore doesn't work then check which Windows Updates were installed at Settings > Update & Security > Windows Updates > Update History, uninstall them there or System Restore again, then immediately check for and block the Updates with the Hide Updates tool explained here: How to stop only a specific update from installing in Windows 11

    2) Update your drivers from the PC maker's Support Downloads webpage for your exact model. While there check for the latest Chipset, BIOS, Sound, Network, USB3, Bluetooth and all other drivers to compare with the version/date installled for that device in Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start Menu.

The most basic thing we need to learn to maintain a PC is how to keep the latest manufacturer's drivers current. Windows drivers are rarely enough.

    3) Expedite install of all Windows Updates (including Optional) in Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for Updates, watching for needed restarts, then go back to check again until no more are offered.

Then go into Microsoft Store app > My Library > Get Updates and expedite all Store app Updates, too, until no more are offered.

    4) Run a full Windows 11 Disk Check: https://allthings.how/how-to-run-chkdsk-in-windows-11/. This is to check the disk and file system condition which can factor into any case, and sometimes later proves to be the cause if it's left out.

    5) Establish a Clean Boot to turn off Startup Freeloaders that can conflict and cause issues: How to Perform a Clean Boot on Windows 11

    6) Test for account corruption by creating a new Local Admin account to see if the problem goes away: How to create local administrator account on Windows 11 - Pureinfotech Sign into the new account, test it works correctly, if so move files over, test all apps work or reinstall any that don't. Then when ready delete the old account in Settings > Accounts > Family & Other Users. You can change it to your Microsoft account if desired in Settings > Accounts > Your Info > Sign in with a Microsoft Account Instead.

    7) Download, install and run a full scan with free Malwarebyes from Download Malware Removal | Free Antivirus Scan & Virus Protection Tool after enabling Root Kit scan in Scan Settings. Clean Up anything it finds and then run again. Turn off Real Time trial in Control panel to keep as on-demand scanner.

    8) Run System File Checker/DISM in WIndows 11 to find and fix any broken System files: Use System File Checker (SFC) to Repair System Files in Windows 11 Tutorial

    9) If that doesn't fix it then you can do a Windows 11 Repair Upgrade which reinstalls Windows while saving your files and apps in place, brings it up to the latest version by the most stable method, takes about an hour and resolves most problems: https://www.elevenforum.com/t/repair-install-windows-11-with-an-in-place-upgrade.418/

    10) To get the freshest start possible you can do the superior Clean Install: https://www.windowscentral.com/how-do-clean-install-windows-11

Create bootable WIndows 11 media by following the steps under Create Installation Media, clicking the link "Before you Start" at https://www.microsoft.com/en-in/software-download/Windows11.

Make sure during the booted install to unplug all other drives, boot the media as a UEFI Device, choose Custom Install, delete all partitions down to Unallocated Space to get it cleanest, choose the Unallocated Space, click Next to auto-create and -format the needed partitions and begin install - this makes it foolproof.

After install expedite all Windows Updates including Optional until no more are offered. Then import any drivers from the PC maker's Support Downloads web page for your model that are newer, or branded instead of generic. The most basic thing we need to learn to maintain a PC is how to keep the latest manufacturer's drivers current. Windows drivers are rarely enough.

Feel free to ask back any questions in your original thread if you were referred here, or in the Comments section below otherwise. Based on the results you post back I may have other suggestions if necessary.

Yes, McAfee is one of the worst things you can install and may have already ruined Windows.

Uninstall it in Settings > Apps > Apps & Features, restart PC.

Then run McAfee removal tool to get it all out:

Then try to fix any System Files it damaged by running System File Checker from Step 10 in this checklist:

To find and recover shell User folders the same steps apply in Windows 11 from this excellent tutorial by MVP Shawn Brink:

Restore Default Location of Personal Folders in Windows 10 User Accounts Tutorials

Once you locate or recreate the official Shell User folder - which always has the blue icon symbol on it and a Properties >Location tab - you can delete any other folders by the same name as they are duplicates. Sometimes apps which are hard wired to use only the default Location of Documents will create a new Documents folder there to place info inside, just move the file to the new location and delete it whenever you notice this.
