Windows 10: Windows 7 more reliable than 10 if you want to avoid hangs & crashes

Snap I think the user has some responsibility that the machine can indeed run windows 10 mainly laptops, I don't see many probs from Desktop PC's

 

Turned on my windows 10 this morning and it literally crashed before I did anything.

Haven't had this much fun since I tried using Vista or Linux in a productive fashion.

I really don't give a hoot what anyone else says, my experience is my experience - and I for one get no pleasure tinkering under the hood of my computer just to MAYBE get things working that were ROCK SOLID in Windows 7

And why the **** does the windows app store tell me Skype is already installed and refuses to let me install the app version, when I uninstalled the desktop version and cleaned the registry.
I can't beleive how crap and full of errors this is.

I was thinking MAYBE if I uninstall the desktop Skype and install the app version, it will stop some of the crashing.
But I can't even troubleshoot becasue it simply refuses to download. Literally one problem after another.

App store wont work properly- tells me I already have app installed when I DONT. I plug in my phone and computer crashes, I do business on skype and it crashes MANY times, desktop windows wont display clearly at 125% magnification.

I can't tell you how abysmal this OS is.
It's like I've gone back in time 20 years.

This crap don't work, and I'm out of here.

I suggest you roll back to 7 and fix your problem, clearly win10 doesn't like something under your hood

 

I'm sorry to have to introduce rationale, common sense and a balanced mind into your complaints, OP, but you may like to consider that - just because you are having problems in your very specific, unique hardware combination and unknown, unquantifiable chain of events - that doesn't mean EVERY person who's tested/used/installed Windows 10 has/is/will had/having/have problems. To sum it up, you're ONE SINGLE user in a potential userbase of 1BN+ machines. You're one TINY voice of discontent, and although your frustration is real and valid, one irrational complaint from ONE USER has never and WILL never make something automatically bad or rubbish, it just means - very obviously - YOU are having problems, and once you sort the problems, you'll no longer have problems, and then the myth of it being terrible will suddenly vanish.

With computers, there are SO many variables to consider, that spending too much time over-thinking them, is utterly futile. Either employ a methodical, diagnostic approach, and try to fix it, or... well, don't.

Here's some things to try:

#1 Keep trying to look at your problem objectively and methodically.

#2 Pretend someone is paying you £100 an hour to sort this, with NO limit on funds.

#3 Do LOTS of Googling

#4 Go for lots of walks - step AWAY when you see the signs of stress approaching in the distance

#5 Start again tomorrow

#6 GOTO #1

I'm sorry to also have to introduce rationale and common sense to your advice, but Windows isn't linux.
It should already have support for most generic computers.
There is nothing obscure about the hardware in my Asus K55a.
But for some reason, windows 10 sucks on it.

I'm not the only voice in the wilderness either, others seem to agree with me.

Reminds me of the Windows Vista disaster.

I simply want to use something that works. It's really that simple.

I'm not a Windows basher or a Apple fanboy.

My favorite OS is Windows 7 because of its rock solid performance.
I also would be pleased if Linux had as much support as Windows, because Linux is possibly even more stable than Windows.
But it doesn't - I can hardly get anything done on it, which is why in terms of everyday productive usage, it sucks unfortunately.

So, that's my point. Don't advertise and offer me to download and 'upgrade' my OS when the 'upgrade' is so unstable.
I would't have downloaded it if they didn't keep prompting me to in my taskbar.

I'm back to windows 7 now and life has become easier - that's all I'm interested in.

sorry it didn't work out for you as I think its a good OS, win7 was for sure , to say it was released unstable {]for all} is not true , don't know why you have issue with yours ,mine works just great with out any major or small issues ,but having said that ,I didn't upgrade ,I installed from an iso a few months ago ,so maybe had I upgraded , who know what issues I would be having ,,, happy computing

I personally really like the Windows 10 layout.

Windows 8 was all or nothing - All metro app tiles or desktop only.

Windows 10 has nailed it with the nice pop up tile panel - unintrusive and easy access to apps from the desktop.

But as I said, it was just to unstable and crashing for me to use.

Maybe later after a few updates.

W7 at the beginning of the program was also beset with errors -- in spite of the popularity of W7 you have to consider that even a FEW YEARS after the launch of W7 MORE people were STILL using XP than W7.

XP at introduction was also beset with complaints -- the activation system and the PRICE (Windows expensive it was labelled - XP in expensive being the operative words). It tool THREE complete service packs to fix properly and its life cycle lasted well beyond Ms had even dreamt about. Not bad at all for an OS that was initially received with probably MORE hostility than W7 / W8 or even VISTA.

W10 is for a HUGE number of people doing exactly "What it says on the Tin" or near enough. If it's not working for you there's probably a fairly simple reason -- incompatible hardware, old applications not compatible with W10 or some stupid AV (Anti Virus) system that's breaking the installation.

If you are getting all sorts of faults - did you run compatibility checks etc.
99% of Faults can be fixed quite simply. If in the rare cases Hardware won't support W10 --then Bad Luck but this will only occur in probably less than 0.001% of capable (and I mean W10 capable) computers.

Pity I can't get my Local Bookie to give me odds on that. !!

Whether people LIKE the new GUI interface or not is a totally different question -- and for my part I'm on the whole quite happy with it.

Have you tried sfc /scannow it can truly work wonders on broken systems.

I have a Win10 tablet system that is not online after the first install ( I have more computers for other tasks ) as I use it as a digital sketchbook and internet is not needed. Rock solid, my only gripe, I am suspicious of the inability to turn off windows updates which makes us guinea pigs for Microsofts code - they can make mistakes and mess things up. I think they haven't considered users with non upgradable hardware - my tablet has 20gb free. What would happen when my disk space runs out due to large updates?

I too agree early stage public O/S regardless of version can be a nightmare for some - always better to leave it for a while on critical hardware.

 

Ok i was one saying how great 10 was. But after a week things have changed. I kept getting this bootmgr missing crap over and over. I never saw this in 7. I tried all the fixes for it and nothing worked. If i left my computer sit for 20 minutes it would reboot and i would get that message. The only thing i could do was a hard restart but it would happen all over again. I went back to 7. I'M not the only one seeing this problem. 10 may not be ready and rolling out updated to fix problems while people are using it might be a mistake. I'LL wait for sp1 if there will be one.

 

ALL operating systems have bugs and problems when they're first released, be it Windows, Linux or Mac OS X - they ALL have issues. You're complaining about an OS that has been officially released to the public for a mere *19 days* - you expect every single bug to have been discovered, patched, tested and a fix deployed for EVERY conceivable combination of Windows 10 compatible hardware devices in existence? I don't think you're living in the real world, but I DO think you're just trying to FIND reasons to complain.

Here's a simple fix: buy different hardware that you've heard works well and without bugs.

Here's a more prudent fix for someone with a complaining disposition: learn some patience, walk away for a few months, then come back and try again.

Do you have mission critical reasons to use Windows 10? Ok, so BUY NEW HARDWARE that's been verified as working flawlessly, then you can get on with life, eh?

 

Actually, the answer is you should not install it yet, at least for awhile. Let MS fix some of the problems you are experiencing then try it again in a few months. The unfortunate part of this is you don't know you can't use it until you try it.

 

I haven't had any problems with Windows 10, aside from annoyances which are inexplicably by design, e.g., the crappy Start menu, no Windows Classic theme, inflexibility in general, the "Microsoft thinks they own my computer" vibe that I get from practically everything, the non-critical pre-installed "apps" which have the defining characteristics of malware, wizard-like interfaces everywhere instead of direct access to standard tabbed settings windows.

Everything is so dumbed-down and non-configurable. The "Mail" "app" is a joke, for example. It is so dumbed down that it makes the old Outlook Express look like a full-featured email client. It doesn't even have a "send/receive" button. Worse still, it doesn't even work right. The settings for my POP3 email account from my ISP, which are currently working fine in Outlook, and have worked fine in Outlook Express, Thunderbird, and any other email client I've ever tried, don't work in Windows 10 Mail; well, they work, but only halfway, i.e., it will send email, but it won't receive any.

In any event, I suggest a clean installation of Windows 10. Upgrade installations are a crap shoot, and they always have been. Of course, in the case of Windows 10, if you want it free, an upgrade installation is the only option, at least at first. But once you've done the upgrade installation and activated it, you can then do a clean installation, which is what I did. My initial upgrade installation (from Windows 7 Ultimate x64) worked okay, but there was constant hard drive activity going on; not intense activity, but just the constant sound of something puttering around in there, which was driving me nuts. I had already turned off indexing on all my partitions (which I always do first thing), and I disabled the Windows Search service, but it didn't help. I had intended to do a clean installation after the prerequisite upgrade installation anyway, so I went ahead and did that, and all is well.

 

For the 'Human' condition, adaptation and change is mostly uneasy. *Smile

actually there's MINIMAL change in operating W7 to W10. W8 was a bigger change --and to remind yourself go back through early posts on W8 Forums to see how people HATED W8 initially. W8.1 was a bit better but even that was too "Mobile" orientated.
