Windows 7 Pro Retail upgrades to Windows 10 Pro OEM?!

    Hello,
I current have Windows 7 Pro SP1 64 bit installed from a Retail (not OEM) copy.

If I read the tutorials correctly, I understand that if I install the free upgrade to Windows 10, there is no product key and it is tied to my hardware. Even if I create install media, it will only install on my hardware.

Is it true that to get this I have to give up the right that the Retail Edition confers to move it from one machine to another?

Also, just to avoid another unpleasant surprise, may I presume Pro exchanges for Pro, x64 for x64 etc.?

    Thank you,

License Carried Over from Windows OEM to Windows Upgrade Retail

I'm in a process of doing system upgrade on two computers which would be swapping out the motherboard, CPU and memory, I just a bit confuse on if I currently have a retail version of windows or OEM which I understand can't be transfer.

The first system had the following OS upgrades:

Windows 7 Pro OEM -> Upgrade version Windows 8 pro Retail -> Windows 8.1 Pro -> Windows 10 Pro

My first question is when upgrading from Windows 7 Pro OEM to WIndows 8 Pro Retail convert the license to Windows 8 Retail or Windows 8 OEM?

My other question is if it is retail after the upgrade do I have to install windows 8 again and activate it on the new hardware and upgrade to windows 10 or can I just call Microsoft to get windows 10 reactivated?

The second system had the following OS upgrades:

Windows Vista (I think it was Home and assume it was OEM as it came on a HP desktop) and done a windows 7 pro upgrade retail on it and now on Windows 10 pro.

    Same questions for this system.

Thanks for any help on this.

Windows 7 Pro Retail upgrades to Windows 10 Pro OEM?!

There is no giving up anything - digital entitlement is merely ensuring you are entitled to the free upgrade by checking your Win 7 licence edition and activation. Thereby providing a digital licence for Win 10 based on that for the hardware it has been installed on.

The Win 7 licence retains it's rights, however, the digital entitlement that it has conferred, does not assume those privileges and is bound to that hardware.

You still have the right to move your Windows 7 Pro retail license to another computer.

There appears to be some work on a function to be able to move your Windows 10 digital license to another computer based upon linking the digital license to your MS Account.

The fact is, though, read the terms of the free upgrade offer from Microosft. They never offered to upgrade your Windows 7 license to a Windows 10 license. They only offered to upgrade your device to Windows 10. You are not losing anything in the process, you are still free to remove Windows from the old computer and install your Windows 7 Pro on the new computer.

OK.Thank you to Superfly and NavyLCDR.

That takes care of my issue. As long as I get to keep my Windows 7 License and key, no more complaint. I was afraid based, I think, on a post somewhere in this forum, that the windows 7 would be deactivated.

Come to think of it if they did that it would make "roll back" rather complicated I suppose.
    Thank you,
