  1. Windows 8, 8.1 & 10 versus Windows 7

I just wanted to add in that if anyone had a chance to read my post from page 6 I mentioned that I have all 3 OS'es in use presently and even though I do consider W7 my most liked Windows, I really do like W10 very much as well. Its vastly superior to W8 and reminds me a lot of W7. The only things that bother me are few minor things like Windows Sounds are off by default, the confirm dialog for deleting (recycle bin) which I turn back on (because I hit the del key sometimes accidentally and delete files without confirm) but these are minor gripes I can live with. Some people need sounds and confirm delete dialog. I am not sure why MS decided to have them off by default ... very strange.

The only beef I have with W10 right now is the unavailability to remove APPS at ease, without using PowerShell Kari method and risking corrupting something in the O/S. My goal is to be able to remove Xbox, Music, Photos, People, and etc as I will never use these apps and I worry about their vulnerabilities as well. If the PRO W10 version allows us to defer Windows updates then the Pro/Enterprise W10 should allow us to remove these unwanted APPS. I hope this is true in the RTM of W10. I am sure business are going to want to suppress the Windows Store APP in the business environment, so I believe if you upgrade or purchase W10 pro as a home/avid user you should be able to remove these. I submitted a request, I hope Microsoft has something in store.

I want to use an OS that was made this decade.

8.1 has been amazing. I've began to warm to 10.

    I always hated 7.

You don't have to remove any apps if you're not using them and you can't be subject to any vulnerabilities if you don't use them.

Let us imagine that Windows 7 SP 1 was marketed as Windows 7.1. With this assumption, Windows 7.1 was released in 2011. Therefore, I am also utilising an operating system that was developed this decade! *chuckle

I take back what I said, initially, about Windows 8.1. I have just installed it on my main PC as a dual boot with Windows 7 to assess its true performance (instead of installing it on a Virtual Machine only). I've also installed the Classic Shell program and I have undertaken a few other interface modifications to make it feel more familiar. In essence, I now believe that it's definitely superior to Windows 7 in terms of operational functionality; moreover, I actually prefer the user interface, too. I'm a convert! *Smile

That a boy...lol (no but really, I like v8.1 - A LOT). I'm perfectly content with slamming Windows 10 mind you. But I think 8.1 has flwon underneath the radar. I'm a former hater of the OS too, until I repaired my friend's PC with 8.1. Then I ran the evaluation on a VM. Now I'm sold.

Do you mean the true UI without Classic Shell?

What took you so long? Lol.

All kidding aside, it's good to see people converting over. It is a great OS.

I live in Portland, Oregon... This town is retro, retro, retro, we have several vinyl record stores, Walmart or our local Fred Meyer (part of the Kroger group) have DVD's and CD's and our Powell's books is world renowned. And CD's? what are you talking about? You can buy them on Amazon, Google, iTunes, in addition to the above I mentioned. My goodness, where is it that you live? You must not be an audio/video type person.

As for this part, Really? You act like no one else provides a desktop interface, I don't see Linux or OSX going away any time soon. Your loyalty to Microsoft is understandable, but there really are other options. As for a unified ecosystem Ubuntu has been doing this for years, I just don't see Microsoft dragging us anywhere, other than trying to keep up.

HippsieGypsie, indeed, it took me a while! *Biggrin After I tested Windows 8.1 properly (not just on a Virtual Machine), it became abundantly clear that it is greatly superior to Windows 7 in every aspect except for some of the user interface (UI) designs, such as Aero. I cannot believe how fast Windows 8.1 boots up on my PC; it literally loads to the Windows Desktop in two seconds. The power off, "Shut Down" procedure is completed at an equally amazing pace.

As regards my comment about the UI, I like certain aspects of the Windows 8.1 UI better than Windows 7, such as the smoother Taskbar. However, I really needed to customise the setup to feel comfortable with it, so I installed Classic Shell and Aero Glass 8.1. Now, it feels extremely familiar and almost identical to Windows 7 in terms of the UI, but with amazingly improved system performance; I am extremely pleased with Windows 8.1! *Smile

Here is a screenshot of what my Windows 8.1 Desktop looks like after undertaking the aforementioned customisations.

    @Windows ,

I'm happy that you're enjoying Win8.1. I've found it to be a very good OS. And with Classic Shell it's just about perfect. IMO. A nice zippy stable OS is always fun to use.

Cheers Jeff. Do you think you will stick with Windows 8.1 or do you plan to upgrade to Windows 10 in the future? I apologise in advance if you have already addressed this question.

I'm going to upgrade. So far I really like Win10 and the latest build is perfect, for me. What my plan is as follows:
1 Replace a dying mother board
    2 Install Win8.1
3 Drop out of the insider program and upgrade to the RTM/GA on or about the 29th.

Thanks for the information, Jeff. I have one extra question, if you don't mind. I assume that you're an accomplished Windows 8.1 user. In your experience, what practical benefits does Windows 10 offer over Windows 8.1? Do you see any improved system performance? From the evaluations on Windows 10 that I have conducted thus far, I am not overly impressed with Windows 10, to be honest; I stated "strongly dislike" in my original post on this thread, which I think was somewhat of an overstatement. All of my evaluations of Windows 10 have been conducted on a Virtual Machine, so my tests have, by no means, been comprehensive.
