  1. Windows 9 Preview possibly next month

    Hi

I'm almost ready to upgrade to 8.1 for the second time.
Last time I had sound issues that I couldn't solve related to my Creative drivers.

I now have a factory DVD with the correct drivers for my computer so I'm going to try and upgrade and then back-grade the drivers to ones that work.

I've tried the latest drivers from Creative and they don't work on my computer.

But with Windows 9 test so close I may just wait and dual boot it with Windows 8 if it will allow you to do that.

That would give my the option to work out the sound issues in Windows 9 without losing the capability of undistorted sound when I need it.

I dual booted Windows 7 and and XP, and Windows 7 and 8, when the beta versions came out.

I hope that they will let you download an ISO and install it as a second OS on it's own partition, I'd hate to just jump into a new OS with no option to switch to the old one when I needed to.

  2. I had issues when I did the store upgrade from 8.0 to 8.1 on my laptop with the original factory OEM install. My WIFI would cut in and out and in and out, same form my wireless trackball. I tried a lot of things that didn't work. I eventually just did a clean install of 8.1. I wasn't an MVP then so I had to hunt up an ISO on bit torrent. Now that I am an MVP and have access to clean Microsoft ISO's, I'm good to go. I did the same thing to my wife's laptop, I ditched the factory install for a clean install of 8.1. No issues doing it that way and it gets ride of the factory installed bloat ware. With any luck I'll still be an MVP when the final version of 9 comes out and I'll get an ISO for that too.

I also had WiFi issues on my tablet when going from 8.0 to 8.1. Never could get it to work so went back to 8.0.

Updated to 8.1 on my laptop and a friends, both upgrades had problems. But got those sorted out. I am not at all excited about Windows 9, actually rather dreading it, I fear it will be a let down. What Microsoft needs to do is focus more on the App store and worry less about the eye candy.

Why do you say they should focus on the App Store?

Last I checked, it was doing well.

I have to agree. I would want performance and security improvements first. Then some GUI modifications and then if needed store mods. For me the App Store/Apps are the least of my concern. I only use about 4/5 presently and I don't think I'll ever need more.

I for one am anxious to see what they've come up with. My guess is that it'll be something good. It'll address the issues that came with it's predecessor and allow everyone to move forward. I'll likely install it fairly soon after it becomes available. (I will give it a few days or so, just to make sure it doesn't blow up people's computers.)

No one is complaining about performance and security of Win 8, most people big complaint is the GUI.
Windows 8 is great, just needs a different shade of lipstick.

I'm not complaining... but making the performance better is always a good thing in my mind.

  11. Well I haven't had any problems with mine, it came as an OEM install on this Asus and it's done the upgrades without problem.

If we get a beta to try out I'd have to do it on my desktop as I'd be able to split off a partition for it on there whereas on the Notebook I wouldn't be able to. It's only got a 320GB drive which came split with C: and D: but the upgrade put another partition between them as a recovery one so I don't really have the room to play with.
I shall be keeping an eye out for developments. *Wink

I would normally just drop a beta into a VM until satisfied it's stable enough to do proper testing - reason being at that time drivers are usually not yet compatible and boot type errors may ensue as well - having said that, the proper way to test it is on a real machine - which is also OK as long as a backup has been made prior.

Seems the next few weeks will be longest ever...*Wink

I think I'm going to put my spare hard drive in my desktop PC and install to that. I'll unplug the others and do a clean install. Then I'll just use my BIOS one time boot menu to switch between 8 and 9. No dual boot left overs to mess with.

Had a ton of issues with8.0 and the oem 8.1 update on this Lenovo i7 8gb ram. it would literally crash and burn 1 out of 3 boots. I am using it to work on networks in the field and it was embarrassing to work with. I pulled the factory drive and dropped 7 on it and have had no issues what so ever. I tried fully updating 8 on it a couple weeks ago and thought it might be ok till I took it home and first boot out of the bag I get the fancy "*Sad oops something went wrong". 3 reboots later I finally got back in. put the 7 drive back in the next day. I know it's a driver issue but I have gone up and down in drivers for over two months. 7 works fine. I'll look at 9 on a VM and see what it looks like. I didn't mind the gui so much I guess. I wasn't impressed with it but don't hate it. to me it's jus bleh.
