I wish, but again I believe this "unified Operating System" approach is the only path MS will take. They want a windows phone, next to a windows tablet, next to a windows laptop, next to a windows desktop, all with the same look and feel. That would lead to your car, next to your smart TV, next to your refrigerator, etc. with that same look and feel. It is the holy grail to these tech companies.

Once they have a generation raised on it, then us naysayers will be the grumpy old crazies of the neighborhood, and everyone will laugh us off. The only thing to ruin that is for everyone to not adopt it. That means an alternative, and for now that's Apple, or Linux. Ever see their share of the market outside of phones, and tablets?

There are already Linux distros that could ease the transition in look and feel, but even disregarding the differences in operation, most of our favorite software wouldn't "just work". The masses won't go there, even if they don't like the changes in Windows, it will be more familiar and friendly and will remain what comes on their new PC.

I believe the best we can hope for is that MS continues to leave the ability to "hack" their OS to modify it to work more like we'd like, as is happening with 8 and 8.1.

Excellent way to look at it, Dave. Two for one. The traditional desktop and the Modern/Metro walled-garden. *Thumbs

Bill, you're correct on the "unified", but I don't think MS will get into the appliance or auto business any time soon or future. The best they'll do is firmware or software to run in/on them, such as Oracle with Java and others are doing. Personally I wouldn't mind seeing 8.1 on my car dash screen as we see screens in a lot of autos today. I can envision them in the TV business, but what is TV today? Multipurpose flat-screen monitors that hardwire, WiFi, and/or Bluetooth to any data source.

On second thought, they are in the TV business: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/Live/Partners

IMO I see nothing wrong with their aim to get an OS to run across multiple devices for familiarity and ease for the user, especially for the non-technical.

We've seen a lot of change over the years and it will continue to change along with the market. The market has gone mobile. You can pretty much thank cell phones, pads, Apple, and Google for that > Not MS. That's going to be all their aim. The desktop PC market has pretty much flat lined. Not much money in it anymore. What's MS supposed to do? Wait? Then it'll be too late.

Bottom line is that they did their best to appease the "desktopper" with 8.1. I think that's the furthest they'll nudge. One can pretty much bet there's going to be more Modern/Metro in the next release.

Tony, they don't have to be in the TV, Appliance, or Auto business to have their OS in those areas. I don't mean they want to start making cars *Wink But they want their OS anywhere there is an OS and a display screen. They may never get there as low powered devices suffice there now, but you can bet they'd love to see their UI everywhere.

Or have something switchable... kinda like switching between mate, cinnamon, gnome, etc.

So... same start-up for all, then at the log-in page one could choose between mobile, tablet, desktop.

Right now I am running Classic Shell on my 8.1 desktop and am happy with it, so if I can continue to do that on future releases, I could live with it.

I went for the Modern screen as my start menu. Less clicks. I recently tried the classic again, in order to help someone with a problem, and found it got in my way. Personal choice, I guess

  11. Personal choice, isn't that great.
Microsoft just has to remember that is what customers want, personal choice.

  12. I'm happy with 8.2 and actually don't miss the classic start menu. I know people that would though, so having it available as an option would be a good move on Microsoft's part. I'd be surprised if they let you completely hide Metro though. It's likely that the taskbar desktop Start Orb will be able to launch the classic start menu. Metro will be just sitting in the background waiting to pounce. We'll all have to wait and see though.

I think MS will give the option to the user, they are already thinking how to get people off of Win7 onto Win8, by the time Win9 comes out.
They don't want to keep supporting it.

  14. Hi everyone, glad to be here.

Btw, why am I still thinking that behind all the things, MS is going to drive the customer to the path they want it to be? Though Win 8 or 8.1 don't give them much as expected.
