If MS has a special upgrade price I would consider it, but not if I have to pay full retail price. I won't do that until its time to upgrade my system as well. W8.1 Pro works great on this machine and it will be supported for a few years yet, so there isn't any hurry.

Indeed. I can confirm if it is free for Windows 8/8.1 users, and cost more than $70 for Windows 7 Users, I'll be buying a student copy of Windows 8.1 Pro ASAP. There's a decent chance I won't be a student by the time they have a Windows 9 student discount.

  6. Purchased Apps are tied to your Live ID account so those will be easy to reinstall without having to rebuy or enter purchase info etc. They will be listed under "Your Apps" in the Windows Store. A lot of settings can be saved/synced to your Live ID via One Drive's sync feature. No big deal, assuming your using a Live ID. If your not, your not using Metro Apps anyway. For installed programs, Belarc adviser is likely the way to go to save serials etc in case you do have to reinstall them.

That would be a great perk if it's free. I'm happy with 8.1 but am looking forward to 9.

Surely you will also need an ISO if you want to create VMs?

That's very positive. Can you give a source for that information? It seems, at first thought, extraordinary that a product which will not be for sale for at least another 7 months already has a retail price?

I think you misunderstood me. What I was saying is that right now, I can buy Windows 8.1 Pro for $70 because I am a student at a university. In 7 months, that will not be the case, unless I get into graduate school. If Windows 9 will free for, and only for, Windows 8/8.1 users, and it cost more than $70 for a regular retail copy, then it will be cheaper for me to buy 8.1 now, then upgrade, than pay >$70 later. I may have misunderstood what you meant, but to be honest, I find your posts a bit hard to fully comprehend.

Yup, that's what I hope we can get from MS when the technical preview comes out in a week or so.

After reading this I hope that W9 won't be just a (big) update like 8.1 rather than an entirely new OS. Maybe I'm being a bit dramatic, but if they want people to forget W8 they should not only bring back a start menu but they should also change a big part of the visual style and perhaps the logo too. Maybe slightly rounded corners, a different appereance for the tiles, some revised aero effects. But above all a less colorful/childish OS.

Surely an ISO would be great, but I would think MS wants testers to run it bare metal.

Tell me if I wrong but can't you take an ISO and burn that to a DVD and install Windows onto a HDD/SDD from that??

Yes, to single or dual boot, but not VM. The whole idea is for MS to collect data for bug fixes, tweaking, and usage. Not sure if data is collected via VMs.
