Windows 10: Windows activation lost after replacing motherboard

So I'm asking here because I can't actually put in a support ticket because the windows site is shit.


I had to replace a motherboard and now my windows is saying it's not a legitimate copy despite the fact that I HAVE paid for it. It was in a bundle build and I do not have access to it given that I'm either in a different state or different fucking country than the box that may have my information.


First question.


WHY THE FUCK, is my windows tied to my fucking motherboard? Like it's the same fucking operating system and install on the hard drive as it was just with new parts.


Is there literally any way to get my shit activated without the old win8 product key since it was an upgrade and not originally windows ten?


Or am I completely fucked because microsoft has shitty procedures?

There is some confusion about hardware changes on a Computer that will impact their free upgrade activation status. To clarify, the ONLY hardware changes that can negatively impact a customer’s activation status once they have upgrade are changes to the:

• CPU
• TPM
• Motherboard replacement

If you replaces the Motherboard they may have to re activate but this will not require a purchase of Windows 10.

You can try to perform a clean install.

I would suggest you to create a ISO file from the below Microsoft Help Article and try to reinstall Windows 10.

my build is 10240 activated from earlier insider program builds

how do I get my activation back

the hardwere is the same as before only motherboard replaced

Before replacing the Mother Board if Windows 10 was activated, then you can refer the steps/link below for activating Windows 10.

The only hardware changes that can negatively impact activation status once you upgrade to free version are the changes to the:

• CPU
• TPM
• Motherboard replacement

The following changes are examples of hardware changes that will NOT impact the activation status:

• HDD/SSD
• Video card
• Adding extra memory

If you replace the CPU, TPM, or Motherboard you may have to re-activate but this will not require a purchase of Windows 10.
